The period to calculate the pension or the years of Social Security contributions to be able to collect it will not change.

The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, has given a new blow to the table to defend the current pension model and its sustainability against what other parties such as PP and Vox claim, which denounce the poor condition of what is known as the ‘pension piggy bank’ and doubt the sustainability of the current system.

This is not the first time that Saiz has come forward to deny these statements, and some of his colleagues in the coalition government have done the same, such as Yolanda Díaz (Minister of Labor and Social Economy) and even himself President of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez who has taken advantage of the proximity of the general elections to advance a new increase in pensions.

Now it’s been on the chain BE where the Government spokesperson has ruled out any consideration of extending the period for calculating retirement pensions or that any consideration is being given to increase the number of years of Social Security contributions necessary to be able to collect them. He has insisted on the solvency of the public system in the face of the “falsehoods” of the main opposition party.

“We are not at all contemplating extending the period for calculating pensions or extending the necessary years of contributions,” he pointed out, pointing out that today there are 2.5 contributing workers per pensioner, at levels not seen since 2010 and that also leave more than 22.6 million registrations in Social Security and a pension piggy bank that will end this year at around 20,000 million euros.

The ‘baby boom’ is not going to break the pension system

Elma Saiz has rejected that the arrival of the generation known as ‘baby boom’ into the Social Security pension system is not going to break the pension piggy bank. “In no way,” he assured, while defending that these movements are born from a social dialogue for which they have the approval of the European Union.

Precisely, he stressed, everything is designed to guarantee the viability of this system at least until 2050. Regarding State transfers to pay for the expenditure on these benefits, of which echoed the Court of Accounts He has assured that “the fact that this system is nourished by contributions from the State is something absolutely normal, and it happens in systems similar to ours and should not be seen as something that is extraordinary.”

Increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage

Another aspect that she was asked about in the interview is the increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) and she once again pointed out the president of the PP for his “very important lack of technical knowledge” about how this amount is taxed. He has confirmed that he will continue to raise the SMI in 2027, an announcement that could occur before the elections, and that he will continue to be exempt from paying personal income tax.

Social Security receives a new loan from the State to pay pensions and the debt will be around 146,000 million without having returned any of the ten requests

Curro Cordero, 67 years old, pensioner: “I earn 1,780 euros. After 43 years of contributions and 18 months of military service, I deserve it”

But this was not the only point in which he attacked Feijóo, of whom he said “she considers herself a feminist but has voted against the supplement to reduce the gender gap.” That is why she has asked for “seriousness, respect and rigor” when talking about “half of the population” since there are 10.5 million women actively contributing to Social Security.
