The CPI confirms the rise in the price of electricity and rebounds in October to 3.1%

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) confirms the rise in the price of electricity with an increase in the month of October that leaves inflation at 3.1%. In this way it advance CPI data confirmed published at the end of last month that attributed this increase in prices to the cost of electricity and an increase in tourist packages.

The official data, published by the INE (National Statistics Institute), mark a rebound in this tenth month, making it two months of increases after reaching 3% at the end of summer. The organization explains that this increase is due to the fact that the price of electricity rose more than in the same month of 2024.

The Ministry of Economy, Commerce and Business of Carlos Body, has highlighted that the interannual rate of 3.1% that was registered last month follows the trend that was already marked in the month of September, of one tenth less and where the increase in both electricity, as mentioned before, and international flights or train transport is implicit.

To compensate for this increase in prices, the price of tourist packages and the gasolinewhich can be purchased for just over one euro at some service stations.

Regarding the price of food, the Government has highlighted that prices remained “relatively stable” in the month of October as the increases in fresh or refrigerated fruits, eggs and olive oil were offset by the price falls in fresh legumes and vegetables, bread and milk.

Core inflation also rises to 2.5%

Core inflation, which does not include unprocessed food or energy products, rose in October to 2.5%, one tenth above the figure for September. This estimate coincides with the one advanced by the INE last month.

When analyzed in monthly terms, from October to September, the CPI rose 0.7% after the increase in the cost of footwear and clothing by 8.2%, due to the beginning of the autumn-winter season, of food by 1.4% due to the higher cost of fruits, meat, milk, cheese and eggs, and oils and fats. Housing expenses continue to rise (0.9%) as a result of the rise in electricity prices and to a lesser extent gas prices.

The leisure and culture group cut its prices by 0.8% in the month due to the drop in the price of tourism and by Autonomous Communities, Madrid and the Balearic Islands have 3.6% and Murcia the lowest rate of 2.2%.
