Pedro Sánchez is immersed in an electoral pre-campaign that takes him through different Spanish cities where he reaffirms his idea of continuity by appealing to the common sense of millions of voters. Precisely to them, and more specifically to retirees and pensioners, he has sent a clear message: if he governs again, will revalue pensions according to the CPI (Consumer Price Index) and will do so by reforming the Constitution.
This statement gains weight now that the Inflation has skyrocketed, reaching 4.9% in the month of September (the highest level since 2023) and promises to improve the purchasing power of the beneficiaries of the public pension system managed by Social Security. The announcement was made at an event held in Gijón (Asturias) in which he made clear the measures that his Government has taken in terms of pensions and social aid, appealing to the mobilizations of hundreds of retirees during the last decade.
He has pointed out that these demonstrations occurred as a result of the “reforms and cuts” carried out by his predecessors in Moncloa. Recently, on October 24, pensioners took to the streets of Madrid to demand a public pension system that remains as it is in the face of the alleged threats of privatization that, according to the Executive, both Vox and PP are making.
An accusation that the president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, was responsible for denying, who confirmed that the pensions would be paid, without a doubt: “we don’t care about the model and the formula, but they are going to be pay those who have worked their entire lives”.
Protected by the Constitution
To protect these pensions as well as their progressive increases, Sánchez has appealed to the reform of the Constitution although, he acknowledged, the revaluation in accordance with the cost of living has been recovered, which allows them to increase as prices evolve.
“Now, in the face of the threat from the PP and Vox, I assume the following commitment: in the next legislature we will reform the Constitution to protect pensions and their revaluation in accordance with the CPI.”
It is intended, therefore, that the updating of this benefit, which is carried out year after year, be included in the Spanish Constitution since it is currently supported by law, specifically the 21/2021 from December 28 where the revaluation of contributory pensions appears according to the CPI evolution data. In order to carry out this proposal, it is necessary to first approve the reform of the Constitution and for this it is necessary that there be a parliamentary majority, therefore, it is not something that depends exclusively on the Government.
PP and Vox “want to cut pensions”
During his rally held in Asturias, Sánchez took the opportunity to throw a jab once again at his direct political rivals. PP and Vox have been at the center of criticism regarding the revaluation of pensions and the attempt that, according to the socialist leader, is being made to privatize them.

“We will do it so that no right-wing government can ever again cut the purchasing power of our pensioners or put the public pension system at risk.” The president has highlighted that the Executive will work to value social policies and the rights of retirees.
