Find parking It’s not always easy. Some take advantage of any small space to park their car, and even do so in areas where parking is not allowed, but others take the mischief further and continue using parking cards for spaces for people with disabilities to which they are not entitled. This is what a man in the United Kingdom did, who has been fined 348 pounds (about 416 euros) for using his deceased mother-in-law’s card.

According to information published by TheNewsthe man had traveled with his wife, his daughter and his granddaughter to spend Christmas in Bristol. On December 30, 2025, after going around several times looking for parking, he decided to leave his car in a space reserved for people with disabilities, placing in the vehicle the parking card of his mother-in-law, who had died in 2023 at the age of 95.

However, a municipal agent was able to verify that the card had been canceled for two years and asked him why he was using it. Although he initially claimed that it belonged to his wife, he ended up recognizing that it belonged to his deceased mother-in-law and the case ended up in court, where he was fined for improper use of a parking card for people with disabilities.

From what the agent explained, when he asked the driver about the card, he first assured that it belonged to his wife, although he later acknowledged that it belonged to his mother-in-law. “She’s not here with us today,” he initially responded, before admitting that the woman had long since passed away.

The man also acknowledged that he knew that it was not allowed to use the card if its holder was not traveling in the vehicle and assured that it was probably the second time he had done so.

In the explanations he later sent to the City Council, he said that he had traveled from Bristol with his family and that he had walked around the block three times trying to find a place to park.

In addition, he explained that they were carrying Christmas gifts, a suitcase, a baby stroller and a travel crib, and that his wife had difficulty walking and suffered from asthma, so she could not travel long distances easily.

He acknowledged that he knew he could not use the card and will have to pay a fine

One of the main issues that the authorities took into account was that the driver knew the rules for using parking cards for people with disabilities.

In fact, when the agent asked him if he knew that he could not use his mother-in-law’s card, the man acknowledged that he was aware that it was prohibited to do so.

In his explanations to the City Council, he assured that he had made an error in judgment and that he regretted having parked in that square.

The man eventually appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to misusing a disabled parking card.
