Meta falls 7%: the price of betting heavily on artificial intelligence

Growing at a good pace does not guarantee a good reaction in the stock market. Meta lost 7% on October 22 after presenting its quarterly results. The accounts put a key question on the table for its shareholders: how much will it cost to finance its next stage of growth?

The pressure is in the box. In the third quarter of 2026, Meta earned $64,601 million, 26% more than a year before. However, its investment in infrastructure and other assets exceeded the cash generated by the activity: 34,906 million compared to 32,786 million. Free cash flow ended up negative, with a deficit of 2.12 billion.

The difference matters. A company can obtain accounting profits and, at the same time, need financing to sustain its investments. The question for the shareholder is how long it will take for that effort to translate into higher returns.

Meta plans to allocate between 135,000 and 145,000 million dollars in capital investments during 2026. My reading is that the debate focuses on the future profitability of this expenditure: maintaining growth requires resources, but investing more does not guarantee creating more value.

The new actions add another piece to the analysis. The company has approved a class C without voting rights and plans to deliver a new title for each existing share. The statutory modification is scheduled for January 19, 2027; Registration and payment dates will be finalized later.

Receiving more securities does not by itself increase the investor’s wealth. It is important to distinguish this proportional distribution of future issues intended to raise capital, which could reduce the economic participation of current shareholders.

After the drop, looking only at the discount compared to the previous price provides little information. To value Meta, the analysis should connect three elements: how much cash it can generate, how much it needs to reinvest, and what price is paid for those future results.

The opportunity will depend on whether the investment produces sufficient returns. That will be the decisive test of your commitment to AI.
