Two retirees aged 81 and 72 named Rich and Nancy Kinder, who have a fortune of millions of euros, have announced that they will donate 95% of their assets (9,000 million euros) to charitable causes. They will do so through the Kinder Foundation, of which they are founders, which is based in Houston (Texas, United States). The couple has now risen to fame and have gone viral on social networks but, until now, they were complete strangers.

Although they have been among the great fortunes for years, they now join those who have decided to donate a good part of that money to promote social initiatives. A few weeks ago, as reported by the newspaper moneythe announcement came just as a €16 million investment plan for Emancipation Park, the city’s oldest park, had been presented.

One of the causes to which 130 million euros will be allocated is a hospital for the treatment of cancer in children, the Kinder Children’s Cancer Center, which has been developed jointly with the Texas Children’s and MD Anderson centers.

“We want to set an example for our grandchildren”

Nancy Kinder explained in an interview that the initiative to donate 95% of her money arose so that “our grandchildren understand that they have a responsibility to contribute to improving society.” Her husband, who owns an energy company (Kinder Morgan), said that his desire is to “leave a better world than the one we found.”

The Kinder Foundation already has several important collaborations to which they have donated thousands of euros to fund projects in the Houston metropolitan area. One of these is the Memorial Park, which is a green lung that beats in the heart of the city and the Discovery Green, a public space among a landscape of skyscrapers.

The sectors that will benefit from this new donation are health, education and the environment.

An association to encourage millionaires to donate their wealth

Retirees are part of The Giving Pledge movement, an initiative created in 2010 by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet that encourages millionaires to donate a good part of their money. Unlike other benefactors, the Kinders have focused on the State of Texas.

The reason given for the aforementioned digital newspaper is that it was precisely there where they began to make money. “This is how we give back to the community everything they have given us.” In this way, the Kinders are among the largest donors in the recent history of the United States.
