This Spanish beer is the worst in the market, according to the OCU

We like most Spaniards – or we love – beer. We do not say it, but the study Appiniowhich reflects that more than 75% of Spaniards consume this drink. He does it becoming his favorite shot ahead of red wine (53%), white wine (46%) and distilled such as vodka or whiskey (51%). Of course, when choosing brand we have our favorites, and although it depends on taste, for the OCU the Pilsen Cruzcampo beer is the worst on the market.

Here, according to a study prepared by the Organization of Consumers and Users, where more than 30 classic lager beers sold in Spanish supermarkets have been analyzed, it has been concluded that the worst beer is that of Cruzcampo Pilsen. This is something curious, and not for another reason that because it is in particular it is one of the most recognized brands in the beer overview of our country.

According to the OCU, the Andalusian firm variant has obtained the lowest score both in technical aspects and in the sensory tasting made by experts, which highlighted its flavor as “unpleasant”.

On the opposite side, the great winner has been Soft Argus, a white brand of the Lidl chain, which has excelled in flavor, balance and general quality, standing as one of the most recommended options, in addition to being one of the most economical.

But what has led the OCU analyzers to explain that this CruzCampo takes the lowest note of the count? Yes, its “unpleasant” flavor is a good sign to show it, but also other aspects that differentiate it from others and that is better or worse valued.

“Unpleasant” flavor and aroma and leaves no sensation of freshness

With a score below 60 out of 100 and a price of 0.72 euros per can, it is not positioned in quality or price. The tasting by the agency shows deficiencies in regard to the balance between the combination of the ingredients, their flavor and organoleptic characteristics, worse than the rest of the beers analyzed.

In addition, its texture and aroma were other weak points. The experts highlight that the first impression in the mouth “is light but without interesting nuances, with a too aqueous end that leaves no sensation of freshness,” they describe. Compared to other options available in the market, “its character is little defined”, something that for beer specialists is a determining factor to assess the quality of a Lager.

The Soft Argus, Classic Mahou and Original Amstel, the best beers

The process followed by the OCU to perform this ranking has been meticulous. The standards of the Beer Judge Certification Programone of the most prestigious systems internationally to measure beer quality. In addition to blind tastings made by experts, chemical and technical analysis have been carried out to determine the degree of fidelity of each beer in its original style, in this case, the one of the Lager.

Specifically, beers were subjected to organoleptic evaluations, which contemplate elements such as aroma, body, bitterness and texture in the mouth. Technical aspects such as the alcoholic degree, the original density and others such as microbiological stability were also reviewed. All these factors contribute to establishing a global score that defines which are the best and worst market options.

Yes, they have obtained good scores such as the Soft Argus, from Lidl, which has stood out in all categories, as well as the original Mahou and Amstel Original, which took the best results of the entire ranking. One of the OCU messages in this regard is that the price also does not guarantee a better experience: some economic beers have proven better in the analysis than others much more expensive.
