Find the ideal home It is not an easy task and, when buyers finally find it and move into the home, the last thing they expect is to have to abandon it in a few weeks due to structural problems. This is exactly what has happened to families in Scotland who had just moved into a newly built housing estate when they were told that an old mining infrastructure had been discovered under part of the homes.
According to information published by The Sun, The development is located in Gilmerton, near Edinburgh, an area with a strong mining past. Most of the affected residents had moved to the development in February, just a few months before receiving the news that they would have to temporarily abandon their homes.
Some of them had barely moved in when they received the letter informing them that they had vacated the residential complex to carry out new works to secure the land on which the homes had been built.
They will have to leave while they reinforce the ground under the houses
The problem with the land was detected while new construction work was being done in the area and something appeared that the companies in charge of the construction and management of the residential complex described as a “previously unknown mining anomaly.”
From what the neighbors said, it was a hole under the ground, to the point that they would have to dig and inject concrete to stabilize it. One of them summed it up by saying that it was to avoid “falling into a mining pit.”
The measure would affect about five or six homes in the urbanization and some apartments. Residents will have to move to temporary accommodation for a maximum of eight weeks, although the company itself assured that it would cover the costs of the move and alternative accommodation for the duration of the works.
“This was supposed to be our forever home.”
One of the main complaints from residents is that many of the families in the development had only been living there a few weeks when they received the news.
One neighbor said he had spent thousands of pounds refurbishing his garden, while others affected explained that having to move again was causing them a lot of stress, especially for families with children or people with health problems.
