The Spanish couple who lives in a 15m2 motorhome: “Before we had plenty of space, now everything has to be in its place”

Access to housing has become one of the big problems in Spain. With prices skyrocketing in stressed areas and rents exceeding 20 euros per square meter in cities like Madrid or Barcelona, more and more people are looking for alternatives to be able to live with less financial burden.

Compared to the traditional mortgage or rental, other models such as prefabricated houses, small homes or even motorhomes are beginning to gain ground, given the boredom caused by the search for affordable housing options.

In this context is the story of Judith and Javi, a Spanish couple who have decided to completely change their way of living. They have left behind a 140 square meter house to settle in a motorhome of just 15 m².

“No more paying a mortgage… it’s a choice”

The decision was not impulsive, but rather the result of reflection on everything that comes with maintaining a conventional home. Judith and Javi explain it in one of their videos published on TikTok, where they pose a direct question to the viewer: “Have you stopped to think about how much you pay just to live?”

From there, they list the expenses they are going to leave behind. They say that for them this step means breaking with an endless list of monthly payments “No more paying the mortgage. Home insurance, water, electricity, garbage, IBI, community. We are going to stop paying all of that so we can live differently.”

Their message does not focus on escape, but on making a conscious decision about how they want to build their daily lives. Judith sums it up clearly when she states that “it’s not about running away, it’s about choosing.”

Fewer meters, more awareness

Already installed in their new house on wheels, the couple shares how the experience is going. The contrast is enormous: going from 140 m² to only 15 m² implies a radical change in the way the space is organized and inhabited.

They recognize that the first impression is evident “Before there was plenty of space, now everything has to be in its place because if not it won’t fit in at all.” In such a small place, order stops being an option and becomes a necessity.

However, they assure that the sensation goes far beyond the square meters. They explain that this lifestyle has brought them calm and simplicity. “The feeling of space changes everything. Fewer meters, more awareness. We live slower, less mental noise, fewer things, therefore, everything is much simpler.”

The motorhome not only limits physical space, it also forces us to rethink daily habits such as consumption or accumulation. They emphasize that “you can’t accumulate, you have to plan for water,” and that this constant planning transforms the routine.

For them, it is not about a better or worse life, but a different one. They express it simply “Order is no longer an option and it is neither better nor worse. It is a different way of living.”

Despite the limitations, the couple is satisfied with the change. They conclude that, at least for them, the experience is being positive.
