The price of fuel continues to rise relentlessly, accumulating an increase of 2.3% this week, after chaining its fifth consecutive increase. The beginning of 2026 has put an end to the downward spiral that led to seven consecutive decreases in the cost of fuel. Specifically, the average price per liter of gasoline has increased by 0.41% compared to last weekup to 1.464 euros, while the average price per liter of diesel has increased by 0.28% to stand at 1.416 euros.
According to the data from the Petroleum Bulletin of the European Union (EU), both fuels have consolidated the change in trend with respect to the downward spiral that had led them to accumulate a reduction in prices of 3.5%, in the case of gasoline, and of more than 5%, for diesel, since November, leading to increases of 1.95% and 2.31% respectively.
Filling an average tank of gasoline is 6.05 euros cheaper
Despite this new increase, filling an average tank of gasoline (55 liters) currently costs about 80.52 euros, which is 6.05 euros less than a year ago, when it exceeded 86.57 euros. For its part, filling an average 55-liter tank of diesel now costs about 77.88 euros, which is 4.67 euros less than a year ago, when it cost 82.55 euros.
For another week, the average price per liter of diesel remains below the levels it was before the outbreak of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, when it was 1,479 euros per liter. The same happens with gasoline, which is still well below the price of 1,591 euros per liter that it had at that time. Along the same lines, both fuels continue to be far from the maximums they recorded in July 2022, when gasoline reached 2,141 euros and diesel 2.1 euros.
Moving on to make a comparison between the two, diesel is 155 weeks below the price of gasoline, thus maintaining the usual situation prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which caused the price of diesel to be more expensive than that of gasoline continuously from August 2022 until mid-February 2023, when the dynamic was broken.
It is worth remembering that the price of fuel depends on multiple factors, such as its specific price (independent of that of oil), the evolution of crude oil, taxes, the cost of raw materials and logistics, and gross margins. Likewise, the evolution in the price of crude oil is not directly transferred to fuel prices, but rather does so with a time lag.
