The average price of electricity for this Wednesday, May 27, 2026 is €141.79/MWh if a regulated or indexed tariff has been contracted in the free market, according to data published by Red Eléctrica. This is the third increase of the week, although this time smaller, being 1.90% compared to Tuesday. That is, it goes up about 2.64 euros.

To avoid confusion, it must be remembered that this amount refers to the Voluntary Price for Small Consumers (PVPC), which is different from the one published by the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) at noon. The latter shows what the average price costs within the wholesale market.

How are they different? They investigate possible anti-competitive practices in the energy markets in Spain

The National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) is investigating possible anti-competitive practices in the energy markets in Spain. These would consist of the application of excessive prices and the denial of access to energy infrastructure.

Between May 18 and 21, 2026, they carried out an inspection at the headquarters of a company in the energy sector within the framework of open confidential information, following the preliminary investigation initiated ex officio by the Competition Directorate. If the existence of anti-competitive practices in these markets is confirmed, they would constitute a violation of article 2 of the Law on the Defense of Competition and 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

The inspections, as explained by the agency in a statementare a preliminary step in the investigation process of alleged anti-competitive conduct and do not prejudge the result of the investigation or the guilt of the entity. If, as a result of the inspection, indications of practices prohibited by the Law on the Defense of Competition and by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union are found, a sanctioning file will be formally initiated.

The CNMC has recalled that practices of abuse of dominant position constitute a very serious infringement of competition legislation, which can lead to fines of up to 10% of the total turnover of the offending companies in the year immediately preceding the imposition of the fine.
