The average price of electricity for this Friday, May 15, 2026 is €130.85/MWh for consumers with a regulated or indexed tariff contracted in the free market, according to data published by Red Eléctrica. This is the second increase (although not consecutive) in electricity this week, showing a slight decrease of 1.23% compared to Thursday. Specifically, the difference is 1.62 euros, so it will not be particularly notable.
To avoid confusion, it must be remembered that this amount refers to the Voluntary Price for Small Consumers (PVPC), which is different from the one published the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) at noon and that shows what the average price costs within the wholesale market.

The price of electricity today, Monday, May 18, in the PVPC soars with 2 sections above 200 euros

The price of electricity on Monday, May 18, skyrockets and up to 7 strips already exceed 100 euros
What is the difference? The PVPC, which affects consumers with a regulated or indexed rate, includes concepts such as access tolls, system charges or electrical system adjustment costs, although it uses the wholesale market price as a base. Thus, it can be said that the wholesale market is the “factory” price of electricity while the PVPC is the “public sale” price, which is regulated by the Government.

The electrical system registered a provisional deficit of 198 million euros in 2025
The Spanish electricity system closed the 2025 financial year with a provisional deficit of 197.66 million euros, according to the settlement published by the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) and collected by Europa Press.
Despite the injection of more than 800 million euros from surpluses from previous years to balance the accounts, the total income of the system, which amounted to 14,304 million euros, was not enough to cover the regulated costs, which stood at 14,502 million.
The CNMC explains that this temporary imbalance leaves a coverage coefficient of 98.37% in a context of high electricity demand, which reached 233,421 gigawatt hours (GWh) during 2025.
The organization chaired by Cani Fernández will publish the final settlement at the end of this year, at which time the final balance of the year will be known. Meanwhile, the gas sector shows a different evolution, with a 10.5% increase in declared income and an increase in gas consumption in the first months of 2026.
