Eggs are one of the essential foods in the diet of most Spaniards. It provides high-quality proteins, is part of the daily menu of millions of families and is cheaper than meat or fish, although the latter is changing after the enormous increase they have had and which is reflected in the latest CPI data. But despite being one of those ‘superfoods’, which is how foods with great properties are known, not all eggs sold in supermarkets maintain the level of quality that their packaging promises. According to the latest analysis by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), which has evaluated 30 brands of fresh eggs (from free-range to organic), the worst supermarket eggs in Spain are the free-range eggs from Alcampo.
The report reveals that, although there is a large price difference between the different categories, this does not necessarily translate into higher quality. Experts warn that many “premium” products do not meet expectations and that terms such as “free-range” or “organic” do not always reflect a real improvement in either animal welfare or flavor. There are many egg merchants who use the name ‘free-range’ to obtain greater profitability (since they are more profitable than industrial eggs), although the quality that is assumed is not real.

The worst supermarket eggs according to the OCU
After the exhaustive analysis of freshness, shell thickness, yolk color and flavor, the OCU concludes that Alcampo free-range eggs are the worst positioned in the entire study. The experts detected a lack of freshness, fragile shells and too pale yolks, which indicates insufficient feeding of the chickens, according to the media. The National. Furthermore, the flavor was described as tasteless and very far from what is expected from a truly free-range egg.
The report detailed that Auchan’s free-range eggs “do not meet the quality standards that consumers expect”, the experts highlighting that Alcampo fails to offer trustworthy products in this case, as on the contrary it does with products such as coffee.
The best supermarket eggs for OCU
On the other hand, the report on eggs sold in supermarkets and food stores indicates that the best organic egg options analyzed are from these brands:
- Rujamar, with a price per unit of 0.41 euros.
- Carrefour Bio, with a price of 0.39 euros per egg.
These organic eggs stand out for their quality, flavor and, especially, for their commitment to sustainable production practices and greater respect for animal welfare, an aspect that consumers increasingly value.
In addition, the OCU also gives a good rating to:
- Guillén Eggs (Mercadona)
- Pazo de Vilane (camperos)
These brands are well received by the OCU due in large part to their overall quality and greater consistency between what they promise and what they ultimately offer to the consumer.
The OCU insists that, when choosing eggs, you should not only look at the price. Factors such as origin, breeding conditions and quality certifications are key to avoid paying more for products that do not meet expectations. Reading labels and comparing brands continues to be the best strategy to get it right.
