In 2023, a record number of companies ceased to operate in Poland, with the construction and trade sectors suffering the most.
In 2023, companies decided to suspend their operations as many as 224.6 thousand times – according to a study by Dun & Bradstreet Poland, cited by “Rzeczpospolita”. This is an increase of as much as 61% compared to 2022.
The situation looks even more dramatic if we compare this result with pre-pandemic data, because then the increase in the number of business suspensions will be almost 250%. The situation is the worst in the construction industry, because in 2023 almost 53 thousand companies were suspended, which is 65 percent compared to 2022. The crisis has also affected the trade industry, where 37 thousand companies were closed, which is half as many as a year ago. The situation is also bad in other sectors.
The emergence of the scientific and research industry in a high position is a certain surprise and very bad news for Polish society. In total, in 2023, slightly over 24 thousand such companies were suspended, which indicates serious financial problems of research companies and translates into a slowdown in the innovation of Polish companies.
– said Tomasz Starzyk, spokesman for Dun & Bradstreet Poland, in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita”.
Dun & Bradstreet Poland data also showed that the most dynamic increase in the number of suspended operations was recorded in the HoReCa sector – almost 17,000, which is approximately 250% more compared to 2022. Before the pandemic, however, this industry saw a 5% decrease in the number of suspended hotel and restaurant operations.
