The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday, September 16, the Royal Decree that recognizes forest firefighters reducing retirement age identical to those of public administrations firefighters. Specifically, 0.20 for each year worked, provided that at least 15 years quoted in the profession are accredited.
With this, a professional with the minimum price will be reduced by his age of access to the pension in three years. The measure complies with Law 5/2024, basic forest firefighters, and closes the regulatory vacuum that prevented its practical application from the entry into force of the law.

The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, Elma Saiz, framed the agreement in the reinforcement of the recognition of a collective subject to “painful, toxic, dangerous or unhealthy.” The reduction will operate with the same stops that are already governed for urban firefighters since 2008, that is, retirement cannot be accessed before the age of 60, or 59 if 35 or more years of effective contribution are not accredited in the activity. In addition, the reduction time will compute as quoted for the purpose of calculating the pension.
The decree sets that the National Social Security Institute will apply the coefficient ex officio when the interested party requests his pension, after accreditation of the period worked. To facilitate management, the Treasury has disseminated instructions to companies and administrations on identification and quotation of the collective.

The new framework is inserted in the procedural reform approved in May, which established a common channel to recognize reducing coefficients to especially painful or dangerous activities. This Royal Decree 402/2025 regulated the processing of applications, the technical evaluation and the periodic review of the benefits. The specific approval for forest firefighters now relies on that route and replicates the existing parameters for other fire bodies.
Beyond the immediate relief for long careers, the standard has budgetary implications: as with firefighters since 2008, the application of coefficients entails an additional quote aimed at preserving the financial balance of the system. The detail of this overotization will be set in the development regulations, as provided by the current regime for the Analog Collective.
The decree to arrive after a summer where, unfortunately the fire has been the protagonist and in parallel to the labor stabilization of the reinforcement brigades (BRIF) dependent on the public company Tragsa, whose agreement was published recently. In this way the government takes a step and thus claim a “strong, stable and protected body”, in Saiz’s words.
