The European Central Bank summons a contest to design the new euro tickets

The European Central Bank (ECB) chaired by Christine Lagarde, has launched a call to change the design of euro bills. This paper currency, which has been in circulation since 2002 (more than 20 years) has served to unite around the single currency to Eurozone countries. Now, the top European banking agency has considered that it is time for euro tickets to change forever. The new design, they point out in the call, will be integrative, will reflect cultural and historical diversity but, above all, it will be much more complicated to falsify.

As the ECB points out on its page webthe call for designers who want to participate is open and the deadline for sending the projects ends on August 18. Then, it will be the Governing Council of this agency that decides the winner and the results will be known before the end of 2026, once a public survey has been conducted.

The Governing Council has already selected two issues for the new euros of euros that are ‘European culture’ where the focus on spaces of common cultural heritage and ‘rivers and birds’ will be put in spaces where the environment and ecosystems of Europe are valued.

Lagarde has been clear when he has explained the convenience of this new design and the importance of this contest: “The euro is more than a currency, symbolizes European unity and diversity, with this contest we invite designers from all over Europe to devise the future of our tickets to reflect our cultural and shared identity and our cultural heritage.”

With these new euro tickets, it is intended to be more complicated to falsify them, thus avoiding the scams. As noted from the ECB, in 2024 about 554,000 false tickets were removed from circulation, that is, 18 false for each authentic. Although the figure is low, when talking about high -value euro tickets, it can be a problem for the scammed person, and that is why it is important to continue improving the security of both the currencies and the tickets.

This contest by which the ECB seeks designers will receive the new ideas until the end of this year and will have several phases, as indicated in the bases of the call. To begin with, an expert jury in Design, Art and Culture (as well as members of the European Bank) will show the most prominent. Then, a second phase opens that will be a public consultation in which citizens can comment.

Taking all this into account, the Governing Council of the ECB will be the one who decides the winning design in 2026. When this process is closed and the new paper currency is print, they will begin to be seen in circulation in 2028. In addition, a marketing campaign will be promoted to make them known throughout Europe.
