The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has published the average gross salary in Spain, which in 2024 will be 2,385.6 euros per month, 5% more than the previous year. Since 2006, when the INE began to compile these data, such a high figure had not been recorded. A few days ago, it was Eurostat that published salary data that revealed how in Spain charges 6,100 euros less than the European average. It should be noted that, to prepare this report, they have taken data from the EPA (Active Population Survey) as a reference.

Now, despite these good data, the salary map in Spain shows some contradictions, for example almost two million workers, which represent 10% of the total, do not exceed 1,070 euros per month. As in 2024, eight years of rise in the average salary have already accumulated after the only fall in the last 10 years was recorded in 2016.

The INE structures this data into 10 salary bands. 40% of employees (7.3 million people) earned between 1,582 and 2,659 euros gross per month in 2024. 30% earned at least 2,660 euros and the remaining 30% did not exceed 1,582 euros per month. In this last group are 1.84 million workers who earn less than 1,068.9 euros.

The average salary has risen more than 300 euros since 2019

Regarding the purchasing power of workers, the INE points out that since 2019, the average salary has increased by 320 euros. A figure that appears closely related to the increase in the SMI (Interprofessional Minimum Wage) which went from 900 euros per month in that year to 1,184 euros (14 payments) in 2025.

Salary inequalities are marked by the dry. Because women continue to be in the lowest brackets with four out of ten earning less than 1,582 euros, less than men. The average female salary, therefore, in 2024 was 2,163 euros, compared to 2,593 euros for them.

As stated by the INE, the gap is due to the fact that there are more temporary contracts than permanent ones signed by women, who usually work part-time or in activities with lower remuneration.

Permanent contracts leave a higher payroll

The type of contract also has to do with the salary. And in this way, employees who had a temporary contract were earning in 2024 an average of 1,872 euros per month compared to 2,484 euros for permanent workers.

Age is also taken into account, and those under 25 years of age earned an average of 1,372 euros, a figure that decreased compared to 2023. Among those over 55 years of age, the average salary rose to 2,680.7 euros.
