In recent years, Spain has become one of the most prominent nerve points in the data centers industry. Multimillionaire investments, the availability of adequate soil, an expanding energy network with renewables and a very solid connectivity are transforming the country into a technological hub of reference in southern Europe.
Unstoppable growth
Only between spring and autumn of 2024, more than 34,100 million euros were captured in projects related to data centers. Companies such as AWS, Microsoft, Meta or Oracle – together with national actors such as Iberdrola – are leading this digital revolution. Some investments are concentrated in Madrid and Aragon, where high performance facilities in localities such as Zaragoza, Huesca or Villamayor de Gálgo already operate.
A promising panorama
The forecasts suggest that, by 2030, this sector could generate between 30,000 and 70,000 million euros additional to Spanish GDP. Regions such as Madrid and Aragon will continue to dominate, but cities like Barcelona are also on the rise. Some reports estimate that the installed capacity of data centers in Spain could multiply between four and six times in the coming years.
Competitive advantages
Spain brings together several factors that favor this advance:
– Abundant renewable energy and more competitive rates.
– Territory available for new facilities.
– Strong international connectivity, both by fiber and by submarine cables.
– Relatively stable climate, which reduces certain operational risks.
Challenges to overcome
The impulse is clear, but not without challenges. To consolidate this position, it will be necessary:
– Improve and expand the electricity grid.
– Accelerate the necessary permits and infrastructure.
– Ensure the environmental sustainability of the projects.
Spain is not only investing: it is reinventing itself as a digital epicenter for the next decade. If everything goes well, what is now perceived as a trend will become a strategic pillar for the national economy.
