The founder of Openai, Sam Altman, transmitted a message of optimism for entrepreneurs on Monday in Tel Aviv, whom he considers “the most fortunate in a long time” for the moment of technological transformation that opens artificial intelligence. “It is the best time to create a startup that I have ever seen, better than with the iPhone. The only comparable is the Internet Foundation,” he said during a talk at the University of Tel Aviv together with Ilya Sutskever, co -founder and scientific director of the company.

In a crowded auditorium, and with dozens of people trying to get entry at the last minute, Altman said that “the land trembles” and that possibilities are being opened “that people cannot even imagine.” Now, he also acknowledged that the expansion of AI entails risks that ask that there be surveillance and regulation.

Artificial intelligence must be controlled

Altman and Sutskever traveled to Israel as part of a world tour to meet with users, political heads and developers. During their speech, they warned that AI can serve both to accelerate the cure of diseases and to create new biological threats if it falls into bad hands. “The world must treat this risk as something that will happen in the next decade,” said Altman, comparing it with the dangers of the use of nuclear energy.

During the intervention, both were defenders of the creation of an international organism that supervises the development of AI, although Altman considered “an error” to impose excessive regulation in this initial phase. “Science and technology are the only way for lives to improve,” he said.

A prominent role for Israel

Openai co -founder praised the talent density and ambition of Israeli entrepreneurs, factors that, in their opinion, can place the country at the forefront of the investigation and application of artificial intelligence. During their stay, Altman and Sutskever met with President Isaac Herzog, with directors of the R&D center of Microsoft Israel, with cybersecurity companies and with other leaders of the technological sector.

“It’s very special for me to visit Israel,” Altman told Herzog. “The rhythm at which the technological and startup community is adopting AI is incredible to see. I am sure Israel will have a huge role in this process.”

The Altman and Sutskever tour began in May and has included countries such as Canada, Brazil, Spain, the United Kingdom and France. After passing through Israel, they will visit Jordan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, India and South Korea.
