Social Security has published the latest updated data on contributory pensions in Spain, where the Government has allocated a total of 14,272.5 million euros to the February payroll. Three quarters of this payroll correspond to retirement pensions. In total, 6.7 million retirement pensions have been paid, followed by 2.3 million widow’s pensions and more than one million permanent disability benefits.
Of the 14,272.5 million euros that the Ministry of Inclusion has allocated to payment, the vast majority corresponds to retirement pensions, with an expense of 10,451.3 million euros. This figure is followed by widow’s pensions, which amounted to 2,275.8 million euros, and permanent disability pensions, with 1,322.9 million. On the other hand, and to a lesser extent, 184.4 million euros were allocated to orphans and 38.2 million to benefits for family members.
Now, these are the global average figures and, given that the pension system is dynamic and flexible, not all pensioners receive the same amount. This depends fundamentally on contributions and years worked, but also varies depending on the regime to which one belongs and the sector of activity.
The highest average pension
In the General Regime, the amount of the average retirement pension is 1,727.2 euros per month according to the latest data. As is the usual trend, self-employed pensioners continue to receive the lowest amounts, with an average in the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers of 1,056.5 euros.
But if we look at other regimes, the sector with the highest average pension continues to be Coal Mining, where the amount reaches 2,995.99 euros per month, well above the Sea Regime with an average of 1,731.1 euros.
Regarding the widow’s pension, the average in the month of February reached 972.8 euros. In the case of the orphan’s pension, this is around 550.14 euros and that for family members rises to 819.46 euros.
It is worth remembering that coal mining traditionally has higher contribution bases than other workers and this explains the higher amount of their pensions. On the other hand, average pensions rise every month due to the natural substitution of beneficiaries, because new additions usually have higher contribution bases, raising the system average. In fact, the monthly amount of these amounted to 1,865.8 euros on average according to the latest data for January.
The average age of access to retirement is 65.3 years
Throughout 2025, 375,324 new retirement pension registrations were registered. Of them, 10.9% corresponded to the delayed retirement modality, a figure that contrasts markedly with the 4.8% that was registered in 2019. These data demonstrate how more and more workers welcome delaying the retirement age thanks in part to the new incentives. As a result of this voluntary delay, the average age of access to retirement is 65.3 years.
The average pension of the system, which includes retirement, widowhood, permanent disability, orphanhood and benefits for family members, is 1,366.2 euros this month, which is 4.5% more than in the same month of the previous year.
In the specific case of the retirement pension, the average reaches 1,566.8 euros per month, an amount received by more than two thirds of all pensioners.
How many pensions are paid and what type
In the February payroll, Social Security has paid 10,446,888 pensions to nearly 9.5 million people.

On the other hand, in February, 1,367,995 pensions had the supplement to reduce the gender gap and 77.6% of their holders were women. The average monthly amount of this pension supplement is 76.95 euros. According to the number of children, 24.3% correspond to pensioners with one child and 49.5% to beneficiaries with two children. About 17.8% receive it with three children and 8.5% with four children.
Less than 18 days to resolve requests
The average time for resolution of the files in January was 17.82 days in the case of retirement pensions and 14.85 days in the case of widow’s pensions. Both processing times remain well below the maximum resolution period of 90 days established in the regulations for these benefits.
Passive Classes
On the other hand, the monthly pension payroll for Passive Classes amounted to 1,758.3 million euros in the month of January. The number of pensions in force was 736,793, which represents an increase of 2% annual variation.
The State Passive Classes Regime fundamentally includes military personnel and civilian personnel of the General Administration of the State, the Administration of Justice of the Cortes Generales and other constitutional or state bodies, as well as officials transferred to the autonomous communities.
