The Social security He has published the new updated data on contributory pensions in Spain, for which the Government of Spain has allocated a total of 13,638.1 million euros to pay contributory pensions, that is, those that include retirement, widowhood, permanent disability, orphanhood and in favor of family members, being 17.2 million euros more. As usual, most of this budget is dedicated to retirement pensions, which represent more than 73% of the total. Specifically, the system pays 6.6 million retirement pensions to which widow’s pensions follow, with almost 2.35 million euros, and those of permanent disability, which exceed one million.

Of the total cats that are 13,638.1 million euros that the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has allocated to the payment of pensions, the most large item is that of retirement pensions, with 9,969.1 million euros. They are followed by widow’s pensions, with an amount of 2,197.3 million, and those of permanent disability, which reach 1,256.5 million. At a greater distance of orphanhood pensions are located, with 178.6 million, and the benefits in favor of relatives, which total 36.5 million euros.

However, these are the average amounts and since the public pension system is so dynamic and flexible, the amounts of the benefits can vary not only by the general regime, but also by the province, the age or the retirement modality.

The highest average pension

If we look at the average pension within the different regimes we see that, within the general regime, the average retirement pension is 1,667.6 euros per month. As usual, autonomous pensioners, belonging to the Special Regime of Autonomous Workers (RETA), continue to perceive the lowest amounts, with an average of 1,010.9 euros per month. That is, the self -employed charge 656.7 euros less per month than employees, which a year is 9,193.8 euros.

If we look at other regimes, the sector with the highest average retirement pension continues to be coal mining, where the amount reaches 2,907.68 euros per month. This amount is significantly higher than other regimes such as the sea workers, whose average is 1,671.8 euros per month.

As for other benefits, the average widow’s pension for the system as a whole is 936.28 euros per month. For its part, the orphanhood pension is 526.03 euros and that of family members at 782.94 euros.

New highs

Until the month of August, Social Security has registered a total of 241,188 new retirement. Then a tendency to take into account is that more and more workers decide to voluntarily delay their retirement. Besides:

  • Delayed retirements already represent 11.3% of all new highs.
  • This percentage more than doubles that of 2019, when they barely supposed 4.8%.

On the other hand, the average pension of the entire system (which includes retirement, widowhood, disability, etc.) is 1,314 euros per month, which represents an increase of 4.5% in the last year. If we look only at retirement, the average pension received by almost 6.5 million people is 1,508.7 euros per month, 4.4% more than the previous year.

How many pensions are paid and what kind

In August, Social Security paid 10,379,303 contributory pensions. These benefits reach almost 4 million people, since some charge more than one pension at the same time. A relevant fact is that most of those who receive a retirement pension are men (59.2%).

The monthly payroll to pay all these pensions reached 13,638.1 million euros, of which the retirement took most, with 9,969.1 million euros (more than 73 % of the total as we have said at the beginning of the article). In those of widowhood, a total of 2,197.3 million euros were allocated, in the permanent disability they meant 1,256.5 million euros. On the other hand, those of orphanhood were 178.6 million euros and those in favor of family members an expense of 36.5 million.

On the other hand, 1,143,657 pensions include the Complement for gender gap reductionwith an average amount of 75.2 euros per month. The vast majority of the beneficiaries of this aid are women, representing 85% of the total. The distribution of this complement according to the number of children shows that 24.7% corresponds to pensioners with a child, 47.9% to those who have two, 18.2% to those who have three and 9.2% to those who have four or more children.

Less than 12 days to resolve a pension application

Social Security takes an average of 9.4 days to resolve a retirement pension application and 11.5 days in the case of widow’s pensions. Both processing times are maintained well below the maximum legal period of 90 days established in the regulations for this type of benefits.

Passive classes

In the month of August, the monthly payroll for passive classes pensions amounted to 1,674.9 million euros, which represents an increase of 94.6 million compared to the same month of the previous year (6 % more). The number of pensions in force of this regime reached 725,631, which represents 14,288 pensions more than in August 2024, with an annual growth close to 2 %.

The State passive class regime mainly includes military and civil personnel of the General State Administration, the Administration of Justice, the General Courts and other constitutional or state bodies, as well as the officials transferred to the Autonomous Communities.
