Social Security has published this month of July the latest data on contributory pensions in Spain, for which the Government has allocated 13,588.8 million euros. As usual, three quarters of this budget corresponds to retirement pensions with about 6.6 million beneficiaries, followed by the widow’s pension with 2.3 million and those of permanent disability with just over one million affiliates.
Of the 13,588 million euros disbursed this month, 9,931 million corresponds to retirement pensions, while 2,196 million are for widowhood pensions and 1,245 are for those of permanent disability. On the other hand, and with a minor amount, those of orphanhood account for 178 million euros of spending and finally, 36 million benefits in favor of relatives.

Now, as we say, the Social Security pension system is so dynamic and flexible that not all pensioners or retirees charge the same pension, since you are usually depending on the quoted years or the resulting regulatory base so that it varies even by regimes and by provinces.
The highest average pension
In the general regime, the average retirement pension is currently at 1,665.72 euros per month, according to the latest data available. For their part, workers assigned to the Special Regime of Autonomous Workers (RETA) continue to receive the lowest retirement pension, with a monthly average of 1,009.61 euros.

On the other hand, and as every month, the sector with the highest average retirement pension continues to be coal mining, where average amount reaches 2,905.27 euros per month. This figure is well above other regimes, such as the sea, whose average pension is 1,668.29 euros per month.
As for the widow’s pension, the average amount rises to 935.35 euros per month in the system as a whole, although it must be said, that in the general regime this amount rises to 993.28 euros. The amount of extraordinary pay for widowhood is not facilitated in the data, but the ordinary benefit already reflects the upward trend of this type of pension.
It must be explained that coal mining has higher quotes than that of other workers, so its retirement pension is greater. To this we must add that because your profession is classified as dangerous or painful, social security offers benefits when retiring at an earlier age than ordinary age and without having to suffer cuts in your pension (although it depends on other factors).
New highs
During the first six months of the year, Social Security has registered 183,696 new retirement high, of which 11.4% correspond to Delayed retirementsa figure that continues to grow and that almost triples the percentage recorded in 2019 (4.8%). That is, that workers look, and much, economic incentives to delay their retirement.
The average system pension (which encompasses retirement, widowhood, permanent disability, orphanhood and benefits in favor of relatives) has risen 4.5% in the last year, standing at 1,311.9 euros per month as of July 2025.
For its part, the average retirement pension is already raised to 1,506.5 euros per month, an amount that about 6.5 million people receive, which represents more than two thirds of the total number of pensioners. This average pension has also grown 4.5% compared to July of the previous year.
How many pensions are paid and what kind
As we have said, in July 2025, Social Security has paid 10,357,872 contributory pensions, which represents an increase with respect to the previous year, since pensions are revalued and new pensions are usually higher than the old ones. These have reached about 9.4 million people. Of the total pensioners, 59.3% of those who charge retirement as the main benefit are men.
The total monthly payroll of tax pensions reaches 13,588.8 million euros. Of this amount, 73% corresponds to retirement pensions, with a global amount of 9,931.4 million euros. For widow’s pensions, 2,196.6 million euros have been allocated, and for permanent disability benefits, 1,245.7 million euros. The payment of orphanhood pensions has been 178.7 million euros, and that of benefits in favor of relatives has reached 36.4 million euros.

By number of children: 25% of the accessories are for those who have a child, 47.4% for those who have two children, 18.3% for three children and 9.4% for four children
Less than 10 days to solve a pension application
Social Security takes an average of 7.6 days to resolve retirement pension requests and 9.2 days in widowhood. Both deadlines are still well below the legal maximum, which is still established in 90 days for each case.
Passive classes
