According to a report recently published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) and the International Labor Organization (ILO), around 16.24 million people worked in the renewable energy sector worldwide in 2023. This figure more than doubles the 7.3 million jobs that the sector had in 2012.
Photovoltaic solar energy headed the generation of employment in 2023, with 7.11 million jobs. They were followed by bioenergy – it includes liquid biofuels, solid biomass and biogas -, with about 2.80 million employees, and hydraulic energy, which operated with about 2.32 million workers.
The report indicates that renewable energies attract a growing investment that favors job creation in an increasing number of countries. However, most of the so -called “green jobs” are still concentrated in a small group of countries such as China, which brings together 46%, Brazil, some nations of the European Union, the United States or India. China is the country that houses the most jobs, with more than 7.4 million employees in its powerful photovoltaic and wind industries. The second is Brazil, which employs 1.6 million people, many of them in biofuels, while around 1.8 million people work in different subsectors.
