As many as 77% of Poles declared that they try to avoid spending money on unnecessary whims, according to the report “Poles’ Own Wallet: thrifty like a Pole” prepared by Santander Consumer Bank. Seniors are the most thrifty.
According to a study published by the bank, 35% of respondents definitely consider themselves to be people who avoid unnecessary spending, while 42% answered that they are “rather” such people. People over 70 years of age most often describe themselves as people who avoid unnecessary spending, with 58% of respondents indicating this answer. People living in rural areas are also much more frugal (40%).
It turns out that two thirds of Poles from this group (66%) try to buy only those things that they need. Another commonly used method is comparing offers in stores and choosing cheaper options (36%). The last place on the podium was taken ex aequo by making shopping lists and buying during promotions or sales (in both cases 35% of respondents avoiding unnecessary expenses). Every eleventh respondent who avoids unnecessary expenses claims that buying for cash helps them to do this (9%), while others limit the amounts spent on transport or negotiate prices (5% of indications in both cases).

However, 15% of respondents do not avoid unnecessary spending, and most often these are people earning from PLN 5,000 to PLN 6,999 net or more (44%). Only 4% of Poles definitely do not avoid unnecessary spending.
When it comes to controlling expenses, Poles most often use a spreadsheet (31%) or their bank’s mobile app to analyze and manage expenses (28%).
