Starting next January 13, Movistar will apply an average increase of 4% in its convergent rates, that is, in the packages that group mobile, landline, fiber and television, as sources familiar with the decision have confirmed to Europa Press. The adjustment, which the operator will begin to communicate to its customers this week, is less than the 5% increase applied in 2024, although it will make household bills more expensive with these packages again.

The most common increase in price will be around three euros per month (36 euros per year), although most of the increases will be below five euros per month. Some modalities, such as Movistar Base and Movistar Autónomos, will remain unchanged. The final impact will depend on the services included in each package, especially those that incorporate audiovisual content, an area in which the telecom retains the broadcasting rights for all UEFA European competitions.

In the communication that users will receive, the company attributes the price revision to the increase in costs in the sector, mainly, and in particular to the increase in the cost of television content providers. Platforms such as Netflix, HBO Max or Disney+, included in several of the operator’s packages, have raised their rates in recent months at double-digit rates, an increase that Telefónica maintains should be partially passed on to the end customer.

How the increase affects customers without combined packages

Users who do not have convergent packages contracted, that is, those who only have an individual service such as mobile, fiber or satellite, will also be affected. For them, the most common increase will be about two euros per month (24 euros per year), both in mobile and fiber or satellite services. The company has not detailed, for the moment, how many customers will be affected or the total impact that the measure will have on its pocket.

The price review comes at a time of pressure for large operators, which are facing the rise in the cost of audiovisual content and heavy investments in new networks. In Spain, the price review also coincides with the announcement by Telefónica of a ERE that would affect 5,040 workers in three of its subsidiaries, which underlines the pressure that large operators face in terms of labor and costs.

It remains to be known, in any case, if Movistar will introduce changes in the configuration of its packages or in its television offer to compensate for the increase and if the increase will be definitive or reviewable depending on the evolution of the content market.
