Last week, the Ministry of Labor agreed with the unions an increase in the minimum interprofessional salary (SMI) for this 2025 of 50 euros more a month. That is, once it is approved in the Council of Ministers and enters into force, it will remain at 1,184 euros per month. Our country is thus located in the average range compared to the rest of European countries.
There are three sections according to Eurostat: above 1,500 euros per month (Luxembourg, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France), between 1,000 euros and 1,500 euros per month (Spain and Slovenia) and below 1,000 euros (Cyprus, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Malta, Lithuania, Croatia, Estonia, Czech, Slovakia, Romania, Latvia, Hungary and Bulgaria).

What is the SMI in Portugal?
According to Decree-Law No. 112/2024, of December 19 by which the minimum amount increased, The SMI is set at 870 euros per month in Portugal. That is, 314 euros less than in our country. The new SMI entered into force on January 1, and although it seems low, it started from 760 euros per month.
The monthly minimum wage established by law prevails over any lower salary established in employment contracts or collective agreements. Therefore, from January 1, 2025, any worker who was receiving a salary of less than 870 euros would have the right to increase the salary to at least that amount.
In the case of part -time employees, the monthly minimum wage is calculated proportionally.

Although this year the SMI in Portugal has remained at 870 euros per month, The Portuguese government agreed with social agents a path that raised the minimum wage up to 1,020 euros in 2028.
