It is not that carrying effective in the pocket is increasingly rare, but more and more people are seen using any card or mobile operation. Although it is always advisable to carry coins and tickets in case the cards fail, as has happened on occasion.

It is there that, as in many other businesses, Mercadona supermarkets also have their payment limit. This is not something new either, but until recently many did not know that this existed when doing something as everyday as making the purchase.

In this way, in the establishments of the Valencian company the limit has been put in the 1,000 euros. In fact, the exact figure is 999.99 euros. This is explained on the chain website presided by Juan Roig. Therefore they consider that “if the amount of the purchase is superior, it can be paid to that amount in cash and the rest by card.”

This measure, which aims to prevent fiscal fraud and money laundering, is not exclusive to the Valencian chain, but responds to current legislation in Spain. In this sense, the company indicates that it cannot make exceptions, even in cases of regular customers or payments combined between cash and card when the established top is exceeded.

Another issue that usually generates doubts among consumers is the maximum amount of currencies that can be used to pay. And the truth is that, in this sense, Mercadona establishes a limit of 50 currencies for each transaction, regardless of whether they are the same value or different denominations.

In addition, they mention that together with the card payments, the Juan Roig chain accepts the fertilizer through Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Wallets of Banks, provided that the card recorded in the application is accepted in Mercadona (Mastercard, Visa and Master). On the other hand, paypal or transfers are not supported as payment methods.

Can you pay with high value tickets?

Another recurring question is about 500 euros and 200 euros tickets. Mercadona confirms that these tickets are of legal tender and can be used as a form of payment in all its stores.

As for broken or deteriorated tickets, the chain ensures that they can be accepted provided that the safety measures of the ticket can be verified.

The imposition of this limit not only responds to the need to control the flow of cash. Transactions of large sums of cash may be more difficult to track, which facilitates the use of these funds for illegal activities. With the establishment of a cash payment limit of 1,000 euros, it is sought to deter large -value operations outside the banking system.
