Juan Leo, retired with 45 years of contributions, has defended the Social Security pension system in a program dedicated to the generation gap between young people and seniors. In his case, he is receiving a pension of 1,600 euros, an amount that, in his opinion, is not enough given all the time he has dedicated to working.
His retirement pension is higher than the average (1,510 euros according to data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration), due, as he claims, to the fact that he has contributed for a long time. “I respect youth a lot, I have four children, but after paying contributions for so long I only have 1,600 euros left… there are young people who earn more.”
“And many others, fewer!”, points out one of the participants in the debate. “They have not worked the overtime that I have done to buy my house and my car, which was a 600 in those years.”
Young people “earn a lot of salary” and are “regularly employed”
In response to the words of one of the young women present on the set, Juan Leo insists: “young people have a lot of salary, regular work and if possible they don’t put in overtime because they are tired. They want to reduce their pensions, and for what? So that they can earn more.”
Then, he refers to the presence of new technologies in the labor market, to which he attributes the loss of “many thousands of jobs.” Then, one of the attendees, Paloma Martín, refutes this idea. “We must stop blaming young people for what they say is that we are lazy and that we don’t want to work.”
