Many retirees, seeing the approaching retirement agethey begin to think about how much they are going to receive with their pension and analyze whether it is better for them to continue working to increase Social Security contributions or apply for early retirement. This is the case of Jacinta, a 64-year-old woman who has been in ‘And now Sonsoles’, where she explained that, with 49 years of contributions, she cannot retire without a penalty.

Due to the aging of the population and the rising cost of living, the pension system is in a complicated situation. It is difficult, in the current situation, to retire and receive a full pension. Therefore, in the case of Jacinta Jiménez, her hopes have faded when she learns of a 7% penalty if she requests retirement at 64 years of age.

It is not the only case that has been known and a few weeks ago Javier Rivas, a 63-year-old man with 47 contributions, He reported that they ‘took’ 13% of his pension. In the program, they said that this woman wanted an early retirement since she had not yet turned 65, the retirement age in Spain. And it is for that reason, she understands, that they penalize her.

“In April I would have reached 50 years of contributions, but it could not have been”

Jacinta has explained her employment situation in the well-known program, where she has assured that “companies, as always, try to take what they can” and has pointed out that “in theory”, in the month of April she would have achieved 50 years of Social Security contributions but “it could not be.”

Later, he pointed out that the situation became complicated with the change of company. “One stole a month from me, the other 22 days and so on,” although he explained that this happened before since “the control that exists now did not exist.”

The woman has a very long working life, working in companies in various professional sectors. Now, he hopes that in the month of January they will be able to recognize the maximum pension, which would be “about 3,300 euros per month”.

Jacinta’s anger, as she made clear on television, comes from the fact that a 7% penalty will mean a significant cut in her retirement pension. “It’s a mess and I’m not willing.” Reviewing, he clarifies that “if I had retired at 63 years old it would be 15%, if it had been at 64 years old, between 5% and 7%.”

“It doesn’t seem unfair to me but rather a shame”

The future retiree considers that what is happening with pensions “doesn’t seem unfair to me, no. Because what it is, it’s a shame. Let’s see, if I retire at 65 they give me 12,000 euros to stay until I’m 66, for one more year.” “They are going to give me 12,000 euros so that I can stay from 65 to 66 years old… when I have almost 50 years of contributions… are they punishing me? What are they about?”

Early retirement brings with it a series of penalties which has been explained by the economics expert Eduardo Bolinches. In an intervention he assured that this is because the years of contributions do not change the fact that the retirement age is 65 years. Therefore, the penalty they apply corresponds to each month remaining until reaching retirement age.

But Jacinta was not convinced by these explanations and complained that she has been working since she was 14 years old so “there should be a bonus for those of us who have worked too hard.”
