We Spaniards have more and more options to pay in stores. From the traditional card, the physical one, to the Wallet application on the mobile phone and now, also Bizum. The use of cash It is becoming smaller and using the phone or watch to pay is common in cafes, stores or supermarkets. And it is more convenient not to carry a wallet loaded with bills or cash and to swipe the card through the card reader to pay for what you have purchased.

Now, the arrival of Bizum has changed the rules completely. The concept of making a transfer via mobile phone, from number to phone number, is beginning to revolutionize traditional commerce and e-commerce. Although it had been designed to pass money between individuals (group of friends who go out to dinner and pay separately, for example) it is now a payment method.

Millions of operations are carried out with Bizum every day between clients of different banks, and entities with as much weight in Spain as BBVA, Santander or CaixaBank have already incorporated it with complete normality. For this reason, small and large stores have stepped up and as of May 18, 2026, you can pay with Bizum.

At first, only clients of CaixaBank, Banco Sabadell and Bankinter will be able to do so, as Bizum has reported on its blog. The other entities will join in little by little over the last few months.

Customers will be able to pay with Bizum Pay or from the bank

Customers will have to use a special app called Bizum Pay or access the in-store payment option directly from their banks. The idea is that it is a card integrated into the phone’s wallet. And, as is done today with the electronic card, it will be enough to bring the device closer to the dataphone, without needing NFC contact.

For this reason, credit or debit cards are excluded, reducing the dependence on these that users currently have. And, by reviewing the payment market in Spain, you can see how the trend continues to be to use Visa or Mastercard.

Businesses are also the big beneficiaries. When a Bizum is made, the money immediately arrives in the account, which will improve its liquidity, and as with payment by card, they will have to assume a commission that will be lower (according to sources from the same app) than the one currently used.
