Iberdrola gives a turn to the global energy economy with its new wind turbines in the Baltic

Iberdrola turn around global energy economy with the installation of 50 turbines of 476 megawatts at the offshore wind farm Baltic Eagle. Thanks to these new wind turbines, enough energy will be produced to supply more than 475,000 families in Germany. The project, as reported by the same company on its website, is part of the agreement between Iberdrola and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar.

Another advantage of this new energy facility is its sustainability because it will reduce CO2 emissions by 800,000 tons per year. Each of these 50 wind turbine ‘mills’ has a unit capacity of 9.53 MW. They have been supplied by Vesta and installed by the shipping company Fred Olsen Windcarrier, an expert company in wind energy.

This is Iberdrola’s second large wind farm in Germany, along with Wikinger (350 MW) and Windanker (315 MW), both in the planning phase. When they are ready, it will be possible to say that Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub has been completed.

It is the first time that this important energy company has worked with Masdar and, in order to achieve this, a large amount of money has had to be invested in historic financing.

Iberdrola sets record in offshore wind activity

The president of Iberdrola explained that the completion of the installation of these turbines at the Baltic Eagle wind farm means “an important milestone” in “a record year” for Iberdrola’s offshore wind activity. “With this project, Iberdrola is close to reaching 5,000 MW of offshore wind capacity worldwide by the end of 2026,” concluded Ignacio Galán.

Therefore, when it is at full capacity, this wind farm, the second in this complex, will represent an important change in the energy transition and the Germans’ commitment to renewables.

For its part, Baltic Hub, as Iberdrola has announced, will have a capacity of more than 1,100 megawatts in 2026. The energy company and Masdar signed an agreement in 2023 with which they committed to jointly invest in these facilities.

Both companies, at ‘COP28’, announced an additional strategic partnership of 15 billion euros to evaluate the joint development of offshore wind and green hydrogen projects in markets such as Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.
