Despite the increasing digitalization of payments, cash remains the preferred means for many citizens. According to data from the Bank of Spain, a 57% of Spaniards still choose to use bills and coins daily instead of credit or debit card, or payment by mobile phone.
However, starting in 2025 some euro banknotes will be withdrawn from circulation, which will create a complication for those people accustomed to using cash, especially for those who depend on it, such as older people, retirees and pensioners.
Which banknotes will be removed from circulation in 2025
The Bank of Spain has announced that from January 2025 some banknotes will be withdrawn due to its deteriorationwhich includes those who present stains, discoloration or damage. This measure seeks to ensure that only banknotes in good condition are used and improve the security of money in circulation.
That is, the 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 euro banknotes will continue to be valid, but only if they are in optimal condition. If these show signs of wear, such as stains or discoloration, could be withdrawn from circulation.
How to change banknotes in bad condition
Banknotes with stains, tears, inscriptions or other damage may be exchanged for new ones of the same value, as long as certain conditions are met, such as that more than 50% of the note is identifiable and that the damage is not intentional. In the case of banknotes stained with anti-theft ink, they can only be exchanged if the holder proves that the damage occurred due to a crime, such as theft.
Citizens can go to their bank or directly to the Bank of Spain, where the banknotes are evaluated to determine their validity. If they meet the requirements, they are replacedbut if not, they will be retained without the possibility of exchange.
Exceptionally, after the recent disaster caused by DANA in the Valencian Community, the Bank of Spain has implemented a series of extraordinary measures to facilitate the exchange of banknotes and coins damaged due to torrential rains, which can be consulted at this link .
