Gonzalo Bernardos warns of the “big mistake” of the government with the SMI: “He has taken those who charge 162 million euros” less “

The approval of the minimum interprofessional salary of 2025 has been involved in controversy. Not because of the 4.41%rise, but for The decision of the Ministry of Finance (and not from the Ministry of Labor) not to raise the exempt limit and make the SMI tax in the Income Tax of natural persons (IRPF). A controversy on which the famous economist Gonzalo Bernardos has also manifested.

Through his ‘X’ account (formerly ‘Twitter’), Bernardos has warned of the “big mistake” of the government not to grant this exemption to the personal income tax, as they have done with the previous increases: “What error, what big mistake! It is incredible that a “progressive” (PSOE) party wants to pay a part (540,000) of those who charge the minimum wage. The SMI increase of 4.4% is left alone at 2.6%, ”he explained, throwing similar calculations (although not quite equal) to those offered by the Popular Party.

In this regard, a step further has been manifesting the collection that the Treasury will get with this measure: “Today, María Jesús Montero has taken the least charging 162 million euros in Spain. He has done it by not raising the minimum exempt from the personal income tax or generating a decrease of € 300 per year to those who receive the SMI and go to pay in the income statement. ”

“The voracity of Montero, Minister of Finance, is impressive”

Third, Gonzalo Bernardos has published a personal reflection on the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, who had already been warning that a “pedagogical” work had to be carried out on this subject, in one of her rifirrafes with the head of work, Yolanda Díaz.

In particular, the economist has expressed that “Montero’s voracity is impressive,” explaining that “If I did not want to raise the minimum exempt to prevent those who charge more from the SMI to pay less taxes, it could have generated a deduction of 300 euros to those who receive the SMI and go to pay them in the IRPF.”.

Add, pp and we can present three law propositions for the exemption of the SMI in the IRPF

During the day of Tuesday, Podemos, the Popular Party and add, in chronological order, presented different propositions of law to ensure that the new interprofessional minimum salary is exempt from paying in the IRPF. Broadly speaking, this is what each one has defended in their respective proposal of law:

  • We can: reform the IRPF law, including a provision so that, in no case, retentions for work returns are practiced in those workers who receive the minimum wage in annual computation.
  • PP: Adjust the IPF exempt limit to the minimum interprofessional salary of 2025, set at 16,576 euros gross per year.
  • Summar: Reform the IRPF law to establish a reduction in the net performance of work for taxpayers whose income is equal or lower than the SMI or that they do not exceed more than 5,000 euros said threshold. In parallel, they want to modify the IRPF regulations to adapt the withholdings applied by payers to the new fiscal reduction.
