Fernando Romay, 65 years: “I did not quote social security when I was at Real Madrid, we could not be autonomous and we tribute like bullfighters”

Fernando Romay is 65 years old and a great sports career behind him, after passing through Real Madrid, CB Zaragoza, Oar Ferrol and the Spanish team. The former basketball player, born in A Coruña, explained in the program ‘and now Sonsoles’ why they cannot access a “fair” retirement pension or retire in the moment that marks social security in Spain.

Behind this problem, which he shares with the Taekwondista Coral Bistuer, there is the fact that they could not quote until the 90s. “They did not leave us, it was impossible. To participate in the Olympic Games (JJOO) you could not be considered as a professional athlete and that implied that you could not quote social security, I could not quote until 1993”.

Another of the disadvantages he found during his working life on the basketball courts had to do with the health issue. For a year, he paid the hospitals invoices, since he was not within Social Security. He explained in the well -known Antena3 program that, when his children became ill, “I knew that I was going to get an invoice, I paid it because I had that, but it was not fair.”

“I have not quoted social security until the 90s”

A story shared by Taekwondo Coral Bistuer athlete, who pointed out that sport has gained importance in recent years. “In the 80s it was not so important, sports was done, but we didn’t win anything. Now, 2,000 athletes have our baggage and our experience. I started 16 years and all those years of training and achievements I have not quoted until 90. We had all the obligations, but not any right.”

During the years he was in Real Madrid, he could not register as a freelancer and tribute as artists and bullfighters, but not as athletes. Another of those affected who explained his problem in the Sonsoles program was Suso García Bragado, a 55 -year -old marchist who also retired at age 50 in Tokyo. “I have joined the world recently, I have assumed that I will be working for many years as a podiatry … more than 70 years.”
