The Public State Employment Service (SEPE) manages the granting of aid and unemployment benefits, both taxpayers and non -contributory. To be a beneficiary of this aid it is necessary to be unemployed and meet another series of conditions. Once the subsidy is received, it is necessary to continue meeting the requirements to continue receiving it in the coming months.
This is how unemployment subsidy works, since it is an aid that is maintained over time and for this it is necessary to extend it in specific deadlines if we do not want to lose it. If it is not renewed, the subsidy could be lost, although the rest of the requirements are met.

Why it is necessary to extend or renew the subsidy
Unemployment subsidy is an economic aid that is granted to people who have lost employment or their contract has been extinguished, being unemployed, and therefore do not meet the requirements for the contributory benefit or have already exhausted it. In order to opt for it, certain requirements must be met, such as being registered as a job seeker or not having high income.
In order to continue being a beneficiary of this help, it will be necessary to renew it from time to time, since if it could be lost or stopped. This, therefore, is a mandatory procedure for those who receive it, including all people who charge this help for a limited time.
On the other hand, it is necessary to know that in the subsidies that were recognized before November 1, 2024, the extensions are semiannual. On the other hand, as of November 1, 2024, they became quarterly.
What is the deadline to ask for extension?
If you receive an unemployment subsidy, the time to renew it depends on the date they granted it.
- Before November 1, 2024: the subsidy lasts six months and, at the end, you have 15 business days to submit the request for extension and not lose help.
- After November 1, 2024: the duration is three months. In this case, every time that period is met, you will have another 15 business days to make the renewal.
For example: if the benefit is approved in January 2025, you will have to present the extension in the first fifteen business days of April. On the other hand, if you had the subsidy since before November 2024, the renewal would correspond to the first two weeks of July.
What if not renewed in time?
If you do not present the extension within the following 15 business days, the subsidy is suspended and stop charging the month that corresponds. In some cases, there is the possibility of recovering it within the subsequent six months, provided you fulfill the obligation to request renewal. Of course, the days or months that you have not perceived are not paid later, since there are no retroactive payments.
Example: If your three -month subsidy ends in September and do not ask for the extension until December, you will lose October and November payments. You will continue to be entitled to subsidy, but those months will not be charged.
If you lose it at all, it only remains to re -process it from the beginning, waiting for the SEPE to approve it, which can delay the perception of aid.
How to request the extension of the subsidy
The renewal can be done in two ways:
- In a SEPE office, delivering the corresponding form together with the documentation that shows that you maintain the requirements.
- On the Internet, through the electronic headquarters of the SEPE, for which you will need cl@ve, digital certificate or electronic ID.
After submitting the application, the SEPE usually responds in a few days. In most cases, the resolution is favorable if your situation has not changed and continues to meet the requirements. If the extension is denied, you can request a review, providing the necessary documentation again (both the already presented and the new one you have).
