Confirmed by Social Security: every 7 minutes a person is retired and the average retirement pension is 1,506 euros

Social Security has confirmed that Spain adds almost 220 new people on the payroll of retirees, that is, one every seven minutes. There are older and older charging the retirement pension that has an average amount of 1,500 euros, expanding to an increasingly age group, above 75 years as a general rule.

The Ministry of Social Security and Migrations of Elma Saiz has published some data (pension statistics, which can be consulted on their website) that reflect great differences in the number of retirees in the different territories. Last June there were 6,473,360 retired people of which 3,838874 were men and 2,634,467 women, charging an average retirement pension of 1,506 euros per month (1,722.56 they and 1,200.86 they) with an average age of 75 years and 18 days.

As publishes EFEif these data are compared with those of previous years, the same INSS (National Institute of Social Security) concludes that there are 39,706 more pensioners in the last 6 months, which marks a 0.62%increase. In the last 5 years, 528,857 (8.9%) and 1,862,896 have been registered in the last 20 years (40.4%).

What can be seen with these social security figures is that in recent years and even months, this increase is being more pronounced, an ascent that is seen when the data is taken as a reference since January 1. They exceed even those of the population as a population that has been 0.15% since the beginning of the year, of 3.8% in 5 years and 12.5% in 20 years.

The average age of retirees rises, but not too much

The average age of retirees is rising, although gradually, until reaching 75 years on March in the month of March, going up almost a month in what we have been, in more than 4 months since June 2020 and in about 11 months since mid -2025.

On the average pension, it has risen faster to exceed 1,500 euros in February of this year, increasing 3.85% in 6 months, 29.6% in 5 years and 118.5% in 20 years.

The number of retirees in the different Spanish provinces changes. But, the data published by Social Security highlights the situation of the Northwest Peninsular especially Galicia, where there are less pensioners since there are many provinces or locations in which disappointment problems are appreciated.

If you look jointly, in Galicia and 3 of its provinces, negative balances have been recorded in the number of pensioners in the first 6 months of the year, with 863 retirees less than at the end of 2024 with 0.18% less.

In Lugo, this percent reaches 0.71%, in Ourense at 0.52%and in Pontevedra 0.10%, as in León. In A Coruña there is a positive but reduced balance, of 0.07% (136 more), similar to what is in Zamora with 0.11% compared to how it closed 2024.

When this period is extended, in the last 20 years there are four provinces that have seen the number of retirees such as Lugo (12.6%), Zamora (6.3%), Ourense (6.1%) and Teruel (3.8%).

In Guadalajara there has been an outstanding rise in the number of retirees, more than double the Spanish average with 1.75%(501 more people) in the first six months of the year, the same as in Almeria with 1,048 new highs (1.48%) and Melilla with a rise of 1.43%.

The older retirees are in Álava and Navarra

On the average age of retirees for territories, since 2005 they have increased in Navarra and Álava, around a year and a half to just over 74.5 years and in Barcelona one year and 3 months to 75 years and 4 months. There are 8 provinces and an autonomous community, Castilla La Mancha, where retirees are younger on average than what they were 20 years ago.

Since June 2005, the average age of retirees in Guadalajara has fallen more than 13 and a half months and in Toledo 4 months. Retirees are older than 20 years ago in Palencia, as in Toledo, where it has gone from more than 75 years to 74.5. In Soria, the average figure of 76 years of 2005 and in Teruel, Lleida, Huesca and Segovia have been lowered in more than 75 years.

Finally, in the month of June, retirees with the oldest age were from Lugo and Ourense (more than 77 years) and the youngest were in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla with 73 years and 4 months.
