Breakfast in Spain is a luxury according to experts: the price shoots and only the toast with oil is saved

It has always been said that breakfast is the most important food of the day, and is true or not, accompanies millions of Spaniards every morning. But the truth is that it has gone from being something affordable for families, to become a “luxury” for many, after the increase in the price of their products. In just two years, breakfast has increased almost 14%, and only the olive oil toas It is saved from these climbs.

This is reflected in the latest data of the ‘Breakfast Index’ prepared by Javier Rivas, professor of EAE Business School, who indicate that “the price of a traditional breakfast (formed by coffee, milk, sugar and toasted with oil) has increased by about 8% on average in the last year, well above the CPI, which stands at 2.7%”.

The increases are especially striking in key products, such as coffee that has risen 20.2%, chocolate 18.1%and eggs 17.8%. Not even changing drinks, replacing coffee with a traditional milk with powdered cocoa, since it has risen more than 11.8%.

Even the pastries and confectionery, present in most cafes and homes, “have grown moderately, just under 2%, while bread and cereals have barely grown 0.3%,” according to the report.

Only olive oil toast is saved

In this context of upward prices, the data reflects that there is only one affordable option for the pocket, breakfast a toast of olive oil, since the cost of the latter has dropped just over 40%.

Javier Rivas explains without surroundings that “breakfast has always been a meal with basic foods and, therefore, accessible for many families and hospitality establishments. However, this new edition of the ‘Breakfast Index’ of EAE… confirms an important price increase”.

The expert warns that “the increases detected in foods such as coffee, chocolate, and derivatives reflect a worrying trend, which could influence a change in habits among citizens, reducing the amount of some products and/or skipping this morning so necessary.”
