An 88-year-old retiree loses his pension and is forced to continue working in a supermarket: a donation of 1.5 million euros changes his life

An 88-year-old man who worked in a supermarket to make ends meet has seen his life change radically after thousands of people turned to his story. US Army veteran Ed Bambas was forced to continue working full-time after losing his pension and running out of resources, until a viral video managed to raise more than €1.5 million to help him retire.

His case came to light thanks to Samuel Weidenhofer, a content creator with millions of followers who is dedicated to sharing solidarity stories. It was he who made Bambas’ situation known after finding him working in a Detroit supermarket, according to an interview with the German media. Stern.

At 88 years old, the old man continued working eight-hour days, five days a week. “I have to work because I can’t afford to live,” he confessed, reflecting the harshness of his situation.

He lost his pension after the bankruptcy of his company

Bambas’ situation began to get complicated years ago. He retired in 1999 after working at General Motors, but in 2012 the company’s bankruptcy left him without the pension he had earned throughout his working life.

Adding to that blow was his wife’s illness, which further aggravated his financial situation. “When I lost my pension, they also took away my medical coverage,” he recalled. He barely had $10,000 left from his life insurance, which forced him to sell his house and properties to cover the expenses.

His wife died seven years ago and, since then, Bambas has tried to rebuild his life without success. “Ever since then I’ve been trying to start over,” he explained. Without sufficient income, he had no choice but to return to the job market.

A viral video that changed his life

Everything changed when his story became public. Weidenhofer shared a video on social media in which Bambas spoke openly about his difficulties. In a few days, the content went viral and sparked a wave of solidarity around the world.

Thousands of people began donating money through a GoFundMe campaign that ended up raising 1.77 million dollars, nearly 1.5 million euros.

The moment the old man received the news was especially emotional. “I can’t put into words how grateful I am,” he said through tears, aware that his life had just changed.

An example of solidarity

The campaign has become one of the largest individual fundraisers in the platform’s history. For Weidenhofer himself, the story has a broader meaning than his personal case and shows a reality that affects more older people than one can imagine.

Bambas’ case focuses on the reality of many older people who, even after a lifetime of work, are forced to remain active in order to survive.

He has gone from working out of necessity to being able to retire

After years of working out of obligation, Bambas now has the opportunity to leave that stage behind. Its story, marked by loss, effort and resilience, has ended up becoming a symbol of solidarity.

“I just wanted to live the life I expected,” he confessed before everything changed. Now, thanks to the help of thousands of people, that wish is much closer to coming true.
