Solar panels are already a habitual image in Spanish roofs, but it is not always clear if their installation compensates economically. The engineer and disseminator Alberto Romaña, creator of the HROM channel, summarizes it with a phrase: “This video will help you know everything that is needed on photovoltaic panels, whether rent or not rent install them.”
In his analysis, he first distinguishes between thermal and photovoltaic panels. The first, he says, “used to be installed especially before 2015, since photovoltaic panels and investors were very expensive.” Today, however, “rent much more to put photovoltaic panels because in addition to serving to heat the water or give us electricity, we can also sell the surpluses to reduce the price of the invoice.”

The four self -consumption models
Romaña explains that “there are currently four types of domestic solar panel facilities.” The first is isolated self -consumption, without a network connection. “The good thing about this installation is that we can practically do what we want and without permissions,” although he explains what there is an inconvenience and that we must take into account and it is, “if there are a few days with clouds, the batteries are discharged and we run out of light.”

The second model is connected self -consumption without surpluses, also called zero discharge. “It takes a device that controls the power that enters and leaves home, the power meter,” he explains. In this case, all electricity is consumed in the house, without sending excess energy to the network.
The third type is self -consumption with surpluses and simplified compensation, the most widespread modality in homes. “We are never going to make money with our solar panels,” Romaña clarifies. “At most they will leave the electric bill to zero.”
Finally, there is self -consumption with surpluses without simplified compensation, designed for companies. “In this case you earn money by selling surpluses in the market, but you become a producer of energy, with all the procedures that it entails.”
The most profitable
Beyond technology, the engineer insists on the importance of geographical and regulatory context. “In northern Spain there are fewer hours of sun, so in 100% winter you will have to consume energy of the electricity grid and you will pay it more face.” On the other hand, in the south “it does take advantage of simplified compensation because there are twice as many hours of sun.”
Marketers rates is also a fact to take into account and that makes a difference. “Iberdrola, for example, gives me the surpluses to 8 cents, but then it sells the light to 23 cents the kWh. Repsol pays to 10 and charges 15” explains. Given this situation, it recommends assessing whether the rate includes virtual battery, which allows “to store surpluses in the cloud to discount them later.”
Aid and subsidies
Investment profitability does not depend only on light prices. Romaña acknowledges that, where appropriate, “I rent a lot, especially for the help of 50% in the IBI for 5 years.” In a large house, he adds, “that savings equals more than the entire kit of solar panels.”
Even so, he warns that these grants vary according to each municipality and that “we must study what type of incentives exist before launching investment.”
Does it compensate to install solar panels?
Romaña’s conclusion is clear but nuanced: “I rent, especially for municipal aid.” Now, he adds that “for the moment I do not compensate me to host myself to the simplified compensation because I have few panels and on cloudy days I still pull the electric grid.”
Thus and for everything that this engineer influencer, the photovoltaic panels are an alternative more and more to take into account, but the answer to the initial question depends on many factors: the location of the house, the number of installed plates, the contracted rate and the available aids. “If you are interested in placing photovoltaic panels in your home, study the conditions well,” the engineer concludes.
