The weather in Spain is about to take a radical turn. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has warned about the arrival of an active cold front that will break through Galicia this Saturday, April 11, to spread rapidly throughout the territory.

This phenomenon will abruptly interrupt the episode of anomalous heat and Saharan haze that has left maximum temperatures close to 30 degrees in points in the north and south of the peninsula. The entry of an air mass of polar maritime origin will cause a thermal decrease that the agency describes as “locally extraordinary” in the northwest quadrant on Saturday and in the northeast on Sunday.

36 hours of total instability are approaching with storms, hail and snow in these communities in Spain

The situation will become especially complicated in mountain areas. Starting on Saturday afternoon, the snow level will drop to 800 or 1000 meters in the Cantabrian and Northern Iberian mountain ranges.

The AEMET has already activated yellow warnings for accumulations of 5 centimeters of snow in 24 hours for areas of Burgos, Soria, La Rioja and the Navarrese Pyrenees. Experts warn that the total thicknesses could exceed 40 centimeters at high levels throughout the entire episode, which could generate “local effects on transportation routes.”

A Saturday of mud and hail rain

Before the polar cold sets in definitively, the interaction of the air masses will cause a frontogenesis process over the peninsula. This will translate into stormy showers that on Saturday will be “locally strong and accompanied by hail” in the southern third.

Due to the presence of suspended dust, the initial precipitation will fall in the form of mud, mainly affecting Andalusia and Extremadura before moving towards the east and the Balearic Islands.

The wind will be another key protagonist of this change of script. In Aragon, the wind will rage strongly and warnings have been activated for gusts of up to 80 km/h in the Ribera del Ebro and Ibérica in Zaragoza. For its part, the Galician and Asturian coastline will suffer a maritime storm with waves up to 5 meters high.

Orange alert on Sunday in the Mediterranean

On Sunday the front will finish sweeping the eastern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Attention will focus on Catalonia, where Ampurdán (Girona) will be under an orange warning for coastal phenomena due to a very strong north wind with gusts of up to 70 km/h and waves of 4 meters.

The drop in temperatures and late frosts in elevated areas are of particular concern to the agricultural sector, as “crop damage” could occur due to the anomalously low values for mid-April.

Stabilization starting Monday

According to AEMET forecasts, the instability will begin to subside on Monday, April 13. A warmer Atlantic mass is expected to penetrate the peninsula, initiating a progressive thermal rise.

Starting on Tuesday, thermometers will recover values more typical of spring, leaving behind this brief but intense winter shock that has put more than ten autonomous communities on alert.
