Winning the lottery is usually seen by most as an opportunity to improve one’s life with the prize money. Although this has not been the case for a young man who, at the age of 17, won a prize of 100,000 pounds (about 120,000 euros) and years later faces a prison sentence after the police caught him with a stash of drugs valued at more than 150,000 pounds (181,000 euros).
According to information published in the British media ‘The Sun’, when Jack Tanbini was working as an apprentice in a warehouse, luck knocked on his door when he won a lottery prize in a draw similar to the one known in Spain as ‘Scratch and Win’.
On a normal work day when he went to buy a bag of chips in a store they allowed him to pay only that, he bought a scratch card, and that small gesture made him the winner of a prize of 120,000 euros. Since then He used the money to lead a more comfortable life, but in the end it did not end with a happy ending.
A stroke of luck that changed everything and ended badly
After winning the award, Tanbini did not manage his fortune in the best way. In a trial prior to the charges he now faces, for reckless driving, he admitted that He spent almost all the money as soon as he received it. The sheriff who supervised the case accused him of having a frivolous attitude towards crimes because he had earned the money without effort, just with luck.
After that trial, in 2022, lThe Scottish police received a tip about the young man who was linked to drug trafficking, and as explained in the media, the first raid on his home revealed a significant stash of cocaine. Among the most notable finds was a 750-gram block with 80% purity and an estimated street value of 142,000 pounds (171,000 euros), as well as another 60-gram package valued at 11,000 pounds (13,300 euros).
In addition to the drugs, police recovered almost £7,000 (more than €8,400) in cash, scales and mobile phones containing messages relating to the sale of illegal substances. During this operation, Tanbini tried to collaborate by pointing out that ““What they were looking for was in a bedroom closet.” and disassociate your partner from the events.
One month later, in In a second raid, authorities seized another 13,415 pounds (16,200 euros) in cash.although no more drugs were found. In total, the value of the substances and the money recovered confirmed suspicions about their participation in drug trafficking activities.
Despite his record, this is the first time he has faced charges as serious as drug trafficking.
During the trial the young man admitted charges related to the supply of cocaine. The judge in the case was forceful when anticipating what awaits him “it is inevitable that he will serve a considerable period in prison.”
In fact he rejected the request for bail and currently remains in custody awaiting his final sentence, scheduled for next January 8 at the Edinburgh High Court.
