Juan Carlos Saavedra, veterinarian and host of the YouTube podcast ‘The Hidden Face of the Moon’ warns of a rise in the price of eggs that, in a little less than a month, could reach 8 euros per dozen, and even at Christmas it would reach “minimums of 10 or 12 euros.” This is an escalation that could leave figures never seen before and that would be supported by various reasons such as avian flu or the rise in inflation in Spain that rose last month to 3.1%.
The reality is that filling the basket at the supermarket is more expensive than it was a few months ago, and eggs, which have already started an escalation, are now added to the cost of beef and lamb. The expert, specialized in food microbiology, has assured that the situation is worrying, and that the rise in the price of eggs will reach maximums in a few weeks, on the eve of Christmas.

“Probably, before the end of this month of November, a dozen eggs will cost around 8 euros in Spain,” he said. But the worst, he warns, will come in a few days. “In a matter of a month, what costs 4 euros is going to cost them at least 8, 10 or 12 euros,” he stated.
The “unstoppable” rise in eggs is caused by avian flu
One of the causes that explains this increase in the cost of eggs is avian flu, which has forced the massive slaughter of birds. “In the last two or three weeks, Spain has slaughtered 5% of its chickens, and we are talking about several million,” warning that “it is not going to stop here.”
He has criticized how the poultry sector is managed, specifically the livestock sector, and especially in everything that has to do with birds that are raised in intensive or semi-intensive systems. This production model aims to maximize the quantity of products in a reduced area, using controlled facilities and technology to optimize efficiency.
“The ships are there for something, it is the safest way to prevent the virus from arriving as it is arriving,” he stressed.
The egg will be almost a luxury product
Regarding the rise in the price of eggs until reaching (predictably) 12 euros per dozen before Christmas (which is equivalent to one euro per egg), he highlighted that this could have a strong economic impact on families.
“A plate of fried potatoes with two eggs still costs 5 euros, because the egg is going to be at a golden price.”
That’s why he advises consumers to purchase ahead of time and freeze beaten eggs in airtight containers to preserve them safely for weeks. “It’s just that they’re not going to go up a few cents, we’re talking about it going to be at a gold price.”
The price increase may not be a matter of one or two months, as the veterinarian points out. “It will continue on an upward trend until well into next year.” It is not the only thing, a notable increase in the price of chicken, beef and lamb is expected due to animal diseases and trade restrictions.
“Chicken meat is going to have a spectacular rise, they are going to find it with difficulty or at prices that are practically seafood,” he concluded.
