One of the characteristics that is most valued when looking for the ideal home It is the location and, as they say, that it is in a ‘good neighborhood’, but what may initially be a quiet and idyllic area can become a nightmare for the neighbors after the arrival of unwanted squatters. And this is what has happened in an American town, where more than a hundred houses have been, according to residents and local authorities, illegally squatted by people who have turned them into centers of partying, disorder and violence, complicating the lives of neighbors and putting the legal and police system to the test.

According to information published by the Daily Mail, The massive squatting of the neighborhood’s homes began in May 2025, affecting homes that, from the outside, looked closed or abandoned. However, squatters enter and leave freely, organize parties in the pools, take drugs and generate garbage that accumulates in the streets. Some have even been seen armed with AR-15 assault rifles, which has increased concern and a sense of danger among neighbors.

One of the squats that has attracted the most attention in the neighborhood was that of a house valued at about $500,000 that was squatted less than 48 hours after the death of its owner, a lawyer. According to his son, the family was devastated after the mourning and, while processing the funeral and the sale of the property, the squatters forced locks, deactivated the alarm system and used a moving truck to move in in the middle of the night.

They occupied the house with an illegal contract

One of the neighbors whose parents built the house explained that the family was unable to grieve when the squatters had already moved in. And that was not the worst, but the situation that has been experienced since then, since they played music at full volume, recorded videos to publish on their social networks and even organized parties with food trucks and valet parking.

When he tried to confront them, they pointed assault rifles at him at the door. Despite the danger, he decided not to respond with violence and called the police.

When the agents arrived at the house, the squatters showed a fraudulent rental contract, which appeared legitimate to the law. Under Georgia state law, if a lease is presented, even a false one, police cannot immediately evict the occupants. That is why the agents withdrew without taking action.

“They know the system,” said the affected neighbor. “The police arrived and he already had the lease. That’s how professional they are.”

The family submitted an affidavit of squatting

Faced with that complication, the family filed an affidavit of occupancy under the recently passed Georgia Occupancy Reform Act. As a result, the police were able to return a week later, issue criminal citations to the squatters for trespassing, and expedite the judicial process to bring them to court.

The use of a false rental agreement even added felony charges, and at least one of them was arrested. The alleged squatter, whose identity appeared on those false documents, is expected to appear in court soon.

Although the authorities acted based on the new law, this was not enough for the family, and due to the delay in recovering the house, the family found the property destroyed, with holes in the walls, accumulated garbage, presence of drugs, weapons and broken windows, in addition to material damage that will require extensive cleaning and repair.

“We were still mourning our parents; our mother had died a year ago, and then dealing with this while losing our father,” one relative lamented.
