The aid that unemployed mothers can request in 2026

Being a mother and being unemployed does not always mean automatically having help for the simple fact of having children and not working, but it does give access to different benefits as long as a series of income and family situation requirements are met. These aids must be differentiated from those that housewives can request, since they are not the same.

Depending on the previous employment situation, income or household composition, an unemployed mother can apply for anything from contributory unemployment to the Minimum Living Income (IMV), including other SEPE subsidies such as the subsidy for insufficient contributions or the exhaustion of the contributory benefit, as well as family aid for childbirth, adoption, birth or a child with a disability. There are also exceptional situations that could give access to other aid such as the subsidy for victims of gender violence, for returned emigrants or even agricultural income (this only in Andalusia or Extremadura).

The key is to differentiate between unemployment aid, which depends mainly on contributions, and assistance or family benefits, which are granted based on economic vulnerability or family responsibilities. Below, these are all the aid that is in force in 2026 for a mother who is unemployed or not working at the moment.

Unemployment and SEPE subsidies for unemployed mothers

The main aid continues to be the contributory unemployment benefit, what we all know as “unemployment”, which mothers who have contributed for at least 360 days can access. In 2026, this benefit maintains its usual structure: 70% of the regulatory base is charged during the first six months and 60% from day 181.

The amounts in 2026 are limited depending on whether you have dependent children. In this sense, unemployment can be between 749 euros per month at least and up to 1,575 euros per month in cases with two or more children, depending on the contribution base. The duration varies depending on what is quoted and can reach a maximum of 720 days.

When the year of contributions is not reached, the subsidy for insufficient contributions comes into play, one of the most common aids among unemployed mothers. This subsidy can be requested from 90 days of contributions, as long as the income requirements are met or, where applicable, family responsibilities are proven.

The duration depends on the amount quoted and whether there are family responsibilities. In the case of mothers with children, it can reach up to 21 months. Regarding the amount, in 2026 it will be established in three tranches linked to the IPREM:

  • 570 euros per month for the first 180 days
  • 540 euros between day 181 and day 360
  • 480 euros from day 361

If the mother has exhausted her unemployment benefit, she can access the subsidy for exhaustion of the contributory benefit. This aid is designed for those who remain unemployed after consuming unemployment benefits and meet the requirements for income and, in many cases, family responsibilities.

Its duration varies depending on the personal situation, but can reach up to 30 months in cases with family responsibilities. The amount follows the same scheme as the rest of the subsidies: 570, 540 and 480 euros per month in sections.

Another option is the subsidy for those over 52 years of age, aimed at unemployed mothers who have already reached that age and meet the contribution requirements. This aid has a fixed amount of 480 euros per month, is collected until retirement and, in addition, the SEPE contributes for the beneficiary towards their future pension.

Aid Amount in 2026 Duration
Contributory unemployment 70% base (6 months) and 60% after. Between €749 and €1,575 Up to 720 days
Subsidy for insufficient contributions €570 → €540 → €480 Up to 21 months
Subsidy after exhausting unemployment €570 → €540 → €480 Up to 30 months
Subsidy for people over 52 years of age €480 Until retirement
Minimum Living Income From €733 (more depending on children) As long as requirements are met

The Minimum Living Income and the supplement per child

When the contribution requirements are not met or the household income is very low, the alternative for an unemployed mother (although many other groups can also request it) is the Minimum Living Income (IMV). This benefit guarantees a minimum level of income and is adapted to the composition of the cohabitation unit.

In 2026, the amounts of the IMV They are based on the existing coexistence unit. That is, if for an adult only the amount is 658.81 euros per month, for someone with children this amount will increase depending on the number of children they have. An adult with one minor can exceed 950 euros per month, with two minors the amount exceeds 1,100 euros. In single-parent families, the figures are higher and can exceed 1,500 euros per month.

It is possible to request the IMV through the Social Security Electronic Headquarters (through this link) or at the CAISS centers.

Added to this benefit is the child support supplement, which increases the amount depending on the age of the children:

  • 115 euros per month for each child under 3 years old
  • 80.50 euros between 3 and 6 years
  • 57.50 euros between 6 and 18 years

This complement is granted together with the IMV or independently if the requirements are met.

Social Security family aid for unemployed mothers

In addition to unemployment benefits, there are family benefits that an unemployed mother can also request if she finds herself in certain circumstances.

One of the best known is the single payment benefit for birth or adoption, aimed at single-parent families, large families or families with parents with disabilities. In 2026, the amount is 1,000 euros in a single payment.

There is also assistance for multiple births or adoption, which offsets the increase in expenses when several children are born at the same time. Depending on the number of children, the amounts are:

  • 4,884 euros if there are two children
  • 9,768 euros if there are three
  • 14,652 euros if there are four or more

On the other hand, Social Security maintains the benefit for children with disabilities, which can be requested by mothers with minor children with a disability equal to or greater than 33% or adults with a disability equal to or greater than 65%. The amount varies depending on the degree of disability.

family help Amount
Payment for birth/adoption €1,000
Multiple birth or adoption €4,884 to €14,652
Childhood supplement (IMV) €57.50 to €115 per child

Other aid that an unemployed mother can also request

In addition to the previous benefits, which are the most common, the official SEPE catalog for 2026 includes other aid that an unemployed mother could request if she is in one of the following cases. This is the case of the subsidy for returned emigrants, the subsidy for victims of gender or sexual violence, the agricultural subsidy for workers from Andalusia and Extremadura and agricultural income. They are not aid linked to maternity, but they are part of the current unemployment protection and may correspond to an unemployed mother who meets these specific requirements.

In the case of the subsidy for victims of gender or sexual violence, its existence is especially relevant because it protects unemployed women who suffer from this situation and do not have the right to the contributory benefit.

And in the agricultural field, the SEPE maintains in 2026 both the agricultural subsidy and the agricultural income for rural workers residing in Andalusia and Extremadura.

The income requirement is key to requesting one aid or another

In most SEPE subsidies it is essential not to exceed 75% of the Minimum Interprofessional Wage. In 2026, this is equivalent to an approximate limit of 915.75 euros per month.

This requirement is decisive, since many mothers can meet the family conditions but be left out because they exceed that income threshold.

What aid is most common in 2026

In practice, the most common aid for an unemployed mother is contributory unemployment, the subsidy for insufficient contributions, the subsidy after exhausting unemployment, the Minimum Living Income with child supplement and, where applicable, the subsidy for those over 52 years of age.

Added to these are specific family aid such as 1,000 euros per birth, the benefit for multiple births or aid for a child with a disability, which complete the protection system available in Spain in 2026.
