Non-contributory disability pensions, better known as disability pensions, change upon reaching 65 years of age and Social Security will change them to non-contributory retirement pensions. The pensioner will not have to do anything, since it is changed automatically and with the same amount, which for 2026 is 628.80 euros per month in 14 payments.
This is stated in article 367 of the General Social Security Law, according to which these pensions “will be renamed retirement pensions when their beneficiaries reach the age of sixty-five,” and which adds that the new name “will not imply any modification” in the conditions that were being charged.
Do you have to request a non-contributory retirement pension when you turn 65?
No. Whoever applies for retirement from scratch must have lived legally in Spain for ten years between the age of 16 and the age at which they begin to collect it, two of them just before requesting it, according to article 369. The disability pensioner, on the other hand, goes to retirement with the amount he had, and from the age of 65 his degree of disability is no longer reviewed, as explained in article 5 of Royal Decree 357/1991.
For example, a person who lives alone, has a 70% disability, collects the full pension and turns 65 in December 2026. That month they will continue to collect their 628.80 euros. When the amounts for 2027 are set, they will rise the same as the rest of the non-contributory pensions, since the disability pension and the retirement pension have the same amount by law.
Nor does anything change for people who also receive the 50% supplement for those who have a recognized degree equal to or greater than 75%, who need the help of another to dress, move or eat, and which in 2026 represents 314.40 euros more per month. Whoever already collects it keeps it after age 65.
Something similar happens with the permanent disability pension, which is contributory (it is charged for having contributed). In your case, the name change to a retirement pension reaches 66 years and 10 months in 2026 and 67 from 2027, according to article 200 and the seventh transitional provision of the same law, and does not modify what is charged.

Of course, the transition to retirement does not free the pensioner from the obligations they already had. You must notify within 30 days of any change in your cohabitation, marital status, residence or income, and submit each year, in the first quarter, the income declaration of the economic unit in which you live, since if you do not do so, your pension payment may be suspended, according to article 16 of the same royal decree.
