Living in a house with a garden has many advantages, although it also means having to take care of its maintenance and prevent the accumulation of waste that could cause nuisance to neighbors. However, when these obligations are not met, problems can end up going to court. And that is what has happened to a man in the United Kingdom who had been accumulating bags of garbage in the garden of his home for years and whom Justice has ended up punishing for refusing to remove them.

According to information published by himself Bristol City Hallthe man lived for rent in social housing in a neighborhood of the city. Municipal services had received several notices about the amount of garbage that was accumulating outside the house, where black bags accumulated from the front garden to the back of the house.

Although the City Council had asked him on several occasions to remove the garbage, the tenant did not listen and the waste continued to accumulate, to the point that it was difficult to access the house safely. Finally, the case ended up in court and the man will have to pay about 865 euros, in addition to taking charge of the expenses to remove all the accumulated garbage.

The problem was detected on March 3, 2025, when municipal services received a notice about the large number of garbage bags that were in the garden of the home.

From what the City Hall workers verified, there were piles of black bags full of household waste that occupied a good part of the exterior of the house, to the point that they prevented safe access to it.

After verifying what was happening, municipal services sent a first warning to the tenant on March 23 to clean up the garden. However, the bags were still there and the City Council had to send him a new notice on May 1 requiring him to remove the waste.

The situation did not improve during the following weeks. In fact, when the workers visited the home again on June 6, they found that not only had the garbage not been removed, but that the number of bags had increased.

In a new inspection carried out on July 24, municipal services found even more waste accumulated in the garden, so they decided to take the case to court.

It was not the first time that he accumulated garbage in the garden of his house.

One of the issues that the City Council took into account is that the man had already had similar problems in previous years. In fact, he had received several warnings in 2020, 2022 and 2023 for accumulating garbage outside his home.

On two occasions, cleaning services even had to go to the property to remove the bags because the tenant had not done so, despite the notifications they had received.

Finally, on February 2, the Court declared the man guilty of failing to comply with the municipal order and imposed a fine of 180 pounds (about 207 euros), in addition to another 500 pounds (about 575 euros) for legal costs and a 72 pound (about 83 euros) surcharge.

In total, the tenant will have to pay 752 pounds (about 865 euros), in addition to the costs of removing garden waste, the amount of which has not been specified.

From Bristol City Council, councilor Stephen Williams explained that these types of situations not only affect the people who live in the homes, but also the rest of the neighbors, especially due to the problems of dirt and the appearance of pests that garbage can cause.

“When household waste accumulates, this affects neighbors, can attract pests and is harmful to our communities,” he said.

He also warned that when owners or tenants ignore warnings to remove trash, the City Council can take legal action to get the area cleaned up and prevent the problem from recurring.
