The dominance of the large supermarket chains that we all know in Spain, such as Mercadona, Dia, Carrefour or Lidl, seems to be coming to an end. We have already seen in examples such as Action that a new supermarket chain can gain a foothold in Spain and take part of the pie from the best-known ones. In fact, this company already has more than 90 establishments spread throughout the country.
But it is not the only case, since other chains are beginning to gain ground in the food sector by opening new stores in different parts of the country. This is what is happening with the Sqrups chain, a new supermarket concept that is imposing its commercial strategy in Spain thanks to its persistence and changing the model with respect to what traditional supermarkets do.
Specifically, this outlet store with a national seal is dedicated to selling top brand products for food, cleaning and other things for the home at very low prices. The idea on which their business model focuses is that of the circular economy, thanks to the fact that they put products on sale from the excess stock of other distribution centers through packaging changes and liquidations.
More than 140 establishments throughout Spain
In this way, the chain has managed to carve out a niche in the Spanish market and continues its expansion. After opening 22 stores in the first half of the year, it now has more than 140 stores in Spain. The company, founded by Iñaki Espinosa in 2014, has concentrated its new openings in Andalusia, Madrid, the Valencian Community, La Rioja, Castilla y León and Aragón.
As for the products that can be found in their stores, food and frozen products stand out mainly since they represent around 85% of what they have, according to Infotailalthough they also offer hygiene items, perfumery and drugstores. All this with very reduced prices, between 50% and 80% less than its original price.
A sustainable model based on reducing waste
As clarified in the chain’s web portalSqrups has managed to give a second life to 26 million items that were in perfect condition, but that, otherwise, would not have had a commercial outlet. In this way, the chain is committed to reducing waste. Another characteristic of these supermarkets is the rotation of stock, with weekly new items and products that only remain in their establishments for a few days.

The company defends this business model and assures that its objective goes beyond offering products at low prices. “We are committed to responsible purchasing, which not only saves money, but also alleviates the overload of the planet and directly reduces the waste we generate as a society,” Sqrups highlights.
