The second vice president of the Government and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, has defended that pensions continue to revalue in accordance with the CPI and has described it as “unacceptable” that there is talk of “payments” or that the public system is attacked. This was stated this Saturday, October 17, during his speech at the XII State Congress of Progressive Unity of the ONCE, held in Madrid.
“We are not going to consent to pensions not being revalued in accordance with the CPI. We are not going to consent to it,” said Díaz, who has accused the right of fighting the social State and has demanded the protection of these benefits against what he considers an attempt to weaken social rights.
During his speech, he appealed to article 50 of the Spanish Constitution to defend public pensions. He also recalled that article 1.1 defines Spain as a social and democratic State governed by law, a reference with which he wanted to place this debate in the field of the obligations of public powers. In the same act, also has responded to Feijóo about absenteeism and medical leaves.
Vindicates the Constitution against attacks on the social State
Díaz has maintained that the Spanish social state has already suffered cuts throughout democracy and has rejected its benefits being questioned again. “To attack again today and hear talk about payouts or attack public pensions (…) is unacceptable,” he expressed.
The vice president has insisted that her intervention does not respond to an electoral candidacy. “I am not in an electoral campaign. I am not running for election and I feel very proud, very honored to have been at the service of my country,” she said.
After these words he defined himself as a “constitutionalist” and reiterated his defense of the social State. For Díaz, pension protection is part of a broader commitment to public services and benefits.
That message has accompanied his criticism of the Popular Party for the financing of the agency. The minister has reproached this group for opposing, as stated, the State assuming half of its cost, despite it being a historical demand of the autonomous communities.
Defense of social protection in Europe
Díaz has also warned that this debate extends beyond Spain. “The fight against the social State is international and they are organized and we need more social State than ever,” he stated.
In this sense, he has announced that this Monday he will be in Luxembourg, where he will defend the European Social Fund. The minister has asked social economy organizations to maintain their involvement and has assured that she will continue working to protect this instrument.

The vice president closed her speech with a request to those who take over the Government after the elections on November 29. He has demanded that they preserve advances in social rights and disability issues. “That they take care of him, that they love him. Being Spanish is exactly this, taking care of our country,” he concluded.
