Gas stations in Spain face the weekend with their two major fuels moving in opposite directions. 95 unleaded gasoline continues its climb and has now risen for eleven days, but diesel A interrupts its streak of increases, falls back and is once again below 1.70 euros. The turnaround in diesel coincides with the respite in Brent, which has eased to around $105 after several weeks at highs due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The price of gasoline rises again and diesel is below 1.7 this week: filling the tank costs less than 93 euros

The price of gasoline and diesel today, May 21, in Spain: up to 25 cents difference depending on the gas station
If we look at the Hydrocarbons Geoportal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, 95 gasoline reaches an average price of 1,581 euros per liter in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands on May 22, 2026, two thousandths more than the day before and 1.6% above the level seven days ago. The 98 variety accompanies the movement and climbs five thousandths, up to 1,761 euros, its highest level of the month.
The behavior of diesel breaks with the trend of previous days. Diesel A drops four thousandths and stands at 1.699 euros per liter, abandoning the psychological barrier of 1.70 that it had recovered just a day before. The correction comes after five consecutive sessions of advances and returns diesel to the area in which it was moving in the middle of the week. The A+ also gives up two thousandths, up to 1,792 euros.

With these prices, a 55-liter tank costs 86.95 euros in the case of 95 gasoline and 93.45 euros in the case of diesel A. The extra cost of refueling with diesel has been compressed to 6.49 euros, the lowest in recent weeks, a direct consequence of the diverging trajectory of both products: while gasoline continues to rise in price, diesel has begun to decline.
Why do some go down and others go up?
The explanation for this decoupling must be sought in the crude oil market and its times. The barrel of Brent, a reference in Europe, is around $105 after falling from the highs at the beginning of May, in a context in which the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to condition global supply, although with the first gestures of detente on the part of Iran.

Diesel, whose marketing chain moves crude oil movements more quickly, reflects this relief earlier. Gasoline, on the other hand, still has the delayed effect of the weeks of highs, since the price of oil does not arrive at the pump immediately, but with a delay that usually ranges between one and three weeks. Hence, both fuels can move in opposite directions in the same day.
The rest of fuels
Among the alternatives, autogas or LPG repeats at 1,027 euros per liter and maintains its position as the most affordable fuel, with more than half a euro difference per liter compared to 95 gasoline. Agricultural diesel B and heating diesel C barely register changes, in line with the stabilization shown by all diesel fuels in recent hours.
