VAT increase on the electricity bill since June

The Government has confirmed that the VAT on electricity and gas will return to 21% starting next June, ending the tax reduction applied during the energy crisis to contain the impact of rising energy prices on homes and companies. Until now, this tax was kept reduced as an extraordinary measure to alleviate the cost of bills.

The recovery of the general VAT rate will mean a direct increase in the final amount that consumers pay for electricity and gas. Although the increase will vary depending on consumption and the contracted rate, the tax increase will affect both domestic users and businesses, especially in a context in which the price of electricity continues to register constant variations.

The Executive justifies this measure in the stabilization of energy prices and the moderation of inflation in recent months. Even so, the Government will maintain other aid linked to the energy sector, such as the electric social bonus and certain support measures for groups and sectors especially affected by the increase in costs.
